Ready to spend some big $$$ but on which one?

Buy what u need ... Bbb virus in progress

What do u mean bbb virus?

Also, asking because I duno what would be the best for me...

bbb virus is Buy Buy Buy virus ;)
rampant virus around unsuspecting DSLR users

if you don't know what is best for you I suggest that you be more familiar with yourself, your shooting style and your equipment
only after being familiar then you will know what works best for YOU. Everyone has different preferences

do you have any lens already? Use that first, shoot more, understand what are the shortcomings of your equipment (eg focal length, max aperture, weather sealing etc) then get the specific lenses

then again I don't know your preferences, you might have the financial means to prefer to get the BBB virus :bsmilie:
then you might want to get:
- 'trinity' of 16-35L, 24-70L, 70-200f2.8 IS Mark 2
- Plus 10-22 as APS-C sensor
- maybe add some common primes like 24L and 85L
hmm think that covers the common ranges, unless you wanna shoot birds/sports ;p

When I owned a 7D I had a 17-55 f/2.8. It was as sharp as an unused razor blade. The 17-55 f/2.8 was my most used lens and it produced a number of fantastic photos.

I found that the 24-105 and 24-70 not wide enough for my needs until I went to full frame. All three lenses are optically 'close' but the 17-55 was better suited for my needs and for a crop camera IMO.

Since you already have the Canon 7D, I would suggest that you rent a cheap Tamron 18-270 or a Canon 18-200. Spend an afternoon and take at least 50 to 100 photos with it. Review your photos and track which focal length you tend to shoot more often. Buy your new lenses based on this evaluation.

Exactly, I don't get why people asking those questions, it's pointless.

I was thinking that but i keep hearing people say the 24-70mm is much better than the 24-105mm.... help here?

i used both the 24-105 & 24-70 prior to purchasing either... i used an APSC EOS 60D body...

when it is time to buy it myself, i decided to go with the 24-105mm. here are the reasons:

1. for most low light situation i'm shooting, f2.8 isn't that great too... though i must say f4 is worst. but with a speedlight, pairing the 24-105mm with a flash seems to work better for me in indoor low light situation.

2. plus the versatility of having the 24-105 focal range .

3. 24-70 seems to vary with different copies, i tested 2 copies and wasn't impressed with one but impressed with the next.

4. 24-70's constant f2.8 is very impressive in decently lighted conditions, but i decided to invest in primes to help me in that situations... works wonders.

5. Weight!~ maybe it may not bother some people... "more weight, better build, balanced with camera body+grip".... but after using 24-70mm for 5 hours of constant shooting, the weight will start taking a toll on you.

But... with 60D, i'm not impressed with the wider end of both 24mm's.... it equates to about 38mm... and i find myself reaching for the 10-22mm most of the time for indoor shoots. Also, if you are not intending on upgrading to full frame.... i would say 17-55mm f2.8 is a winner for apsc.... the reason why i skipped it is because i made plans to upgrade to full frame... and i did...

but if you really wanna choose from the lists you mentioned, i think the combination: 35L + 24-105L works . maybe throw in a cheap 430ex II speedlite just in case. :)

to add on.. if i have your budget, i may just buy both 24-105 and 24-70... they seems to be more of a partner rather than competition...

Like you mentioned, you just got a 7D and considering the lens choices. Why don't shoot for a month or so before making the choice of lens for your Bhutan trip after Christmas? So during this month or so you can realise what you need and actually want for yourself. Rather than asking here as what we provide you are just opinion of ours. What suit us might not suit you ;)

Unless you have too much money you can buy all and try =)

top tip..don't buy on impulse..=) also u must remember ur on apsc..so even though ur using a24mm its still more than 38mm cropped...so ur not getting full wide view..if u want wide go 10.22..which will be 16mm widest...then 17-55f2.8..all these meant for cropped cameras...but well u can always just get the l lenses saves u the trouble if u want a ff camera in the future

Sometimes, people are not sure so they hope to get some guidelines....

For people who shoot more, they develop a style and know what they need......

Ts just need to shoot more.....

Or just.. buy more..
I think I'm just crazy :bsmilie:

I kinda set my mind to buy the 24-105mm f4 L, then the 35mm f1.4 L

Sometimes the mentality is just safety in numbers. Get the most popular one shouldn't go wrong which cannot be applied here.
It's kinda like asking which brand harddisk to get for general use - Seagate, WD, Toshiba, Hitachi, etc... then you see people recommend particular brands and models.

I would recommend the 18-55 Mk 2 IS :) light weight, IS, reasonable optical quality, wide enough. :bsmilie: :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

and save your $ for something with ROE/ROI.

Some difference compare to hard disk.... I see which brand hv lower hd failure rate...

Lens is about your style n usage.
