Hi,
I am looking for an lens for action photography that do not allow usage of flash. Which is a better len to get. I will need the range of up to 300mm as I am taking action occurring 20m off the ground with me standing 20m away from it. Please don't ask me to get 70-200mm F2.8 and 300mm F2.8 as it is beyond my budget. Or anyone can suggest any alternative lens.
Thanks
:)

hmm maybe one of these lenses here..

the sigma shld be pretty alright, as long as the lighting conditions are good.. not sure about the km.. nv used it before.. i think it shld be about the same

KM 75-300mm..cheap and good..

KM 75-300mm..sharp and nice bokeh too

sorry for shameless self-plug, but if u r looking for one 75-300 now, i got one for sale on B&S clubsnap...need to make way for beercan :bsmilie:

Few questions to clarify:
1. What type of action photography ?
2. Indoor or outdoor and lighting condition ?
3. Are you willing to use high ISO with noise trade-off ?

Both lens may not suit your need at all based on your answer above. :)

depends...

if its outdoor, and a bright day light, i think its still workable at iso 400 or 800.

it much cheaper than those big aperture lens an d with extra reach at 300mm
imo one of the most underated lens....someone in dpreview had compared it favourably against the beercan if i remember correctly.

oh ya... minolta got D, sigma no D...

I am thinking of shooting sports climbing indoors with lumination from ambient light. It is not fast action as in basketball but lights generally comes from ceiling lights which is not very bright.

Can be done... even at f/5.6 especially not fast moving... u need to look for brighter high contrast areas to focus... DOF for f/5.6 is not too bad so can easily focus at similar distance but high contrast object and then recompose or refocus... should get a decent lock.

Ambient light with a f5.6 lens, most likely will have to use ISO800 or even 1600/3200. Even though it's not a fast sport, but there is still constant movement of the climber. Another issue will be to lock AF quickly at f5.6 with ambient light.

I did not have experience on Sigma but on Konicaminolta one. From what I had read from Internet, both perform about the same. You may need to switch to manual focus for fast moving subjects. The KM version is cheaper, great for its price, lighter and slightly better bokeh. Sigma is better on marco and 300mm. KM at 300mm lost it contrast compare to at 200mm and Sigma lost its sharpness compare to KM.

The better Lens on budget is Konicaminolta AF 100-300 APO (D or not) is very good. It focus faster than 75-300 only some complaint about not performing under low light condition.

how boit 70-210 f3.5-4.5 or f4.5-5.6????

at the maximum zoom, 300mm is better then 200mm right ? since both will be at f5.6, i rather use a 300mm.
