Hello !

I noticed that whenever I used photoshop to convert Raw photos to jpeg, the resulting file size will be only around 1MB ? If we choose straight JPEG from camera, set to largest size and used extra fine Colour, the resulting file size will be around 5MB? Does anyone know why is it like that?
I choose the 6 MB option while using photoshop to convert

did u set to 1mp output on the raw output? cos there is option to even output to 12mp.

when you save in jpg, there is an option to save in different quality from scale 1-12. 12 is the largest. at 6mp at quality 12, a jpg can easily take 3.5mb.

quality 12? i only see JPEG max quality is 10. but anyway i notice my photo sizes converted from RAW, the sizes depends. but on quality 10, most of my photos r still only 1+mb

yes, there is quality 12. but of cos 10 is good enough.

1mb+ at quality 10. are you shooting something relatively homogeneous such as dark patches (eg black background when shooting with flash) or white patches (eg shoot a piece of A4 white paper). In such instances, the file size tends to be smaller when compared when you shoot say a green patch of grass which has fine details such as shadow and shades.

you should not be too worried about 1mb+ if the file when view at 100% looks acceptable. :bsmilie:

haha yes....the smaller file size the better...hdd running out of space :bsmilie:

so ex, might as well use E-Sata, 320gb Sata Int, only 160+

anyway i used up my 2 320gb in about 1 month... siao liao..

Huhh how did u manage to? That's one hell load of files >_<

I choose the 6.0 MP function, No minus No plus signs (Photoshop)
Quality is 10 ( Maximum default) 300dpi
All the shots are consistently rovering around 1MB file size leh
While I notice the Jpeg files I shot straight out from camera last time are constantly around 4 to 5 MB

I worry that I might miss out something?
Zoom in ok leh, print out also out leh
but the different of 2 and 3 MB of file size???
what kind of data are missing?

keep us posted on your findings.:)

Actually, don't worry too much about it. Normally if you save a file liddat and just view it, even 1mb is no problem. I've got pics that I save at quality 11 that are 400kb @ 6mp. The reason why KM Jpegs are so large is because they use very very little compression, to ensure that no compression artefacts are present so the file can be edited, as any editing tends to make those already-present artefacts even more visible.

Oh yup, one more thing, by default there is colour noise reduction applied, and this may reduce file size by smoothing out colour transistions and hence increasing compressibility of the file. I tend to switch it to zero unless I'm using high ISO as it gives a reddish tinge to high-contrast areas. Not sure if anyone noticed this before.

Cheers =)
