Hi,

I believe the rule to avoiding red eye is to keep the degree of elevation of the flash more than 10 from the eye and lens plane.

Which is to say, external flashes mounted on cameras will work well when the subject is close. But as the subject stands further away, the degree of elevation drops. Going back the maths here. :bsmilie: Thus chances of getting red eyes increases.

Cheers!

Explain further how the angle affects the reflection of the flash light on the retina?

picture this
you are standing in front of a mirror
you can see your image in the mirror
as you slide sideways ( parallal ) to the mirror
you see less and less of your self until you totally can't
see your reflection in the mirror....

Same for the flash
if it is too near to the taking lens,
the light reflects back directly to the film through the retina
but if you raise it up ( thus increasing the angle )
less light is reflected back directly ....

Hope i got it right ?

Hiee....

How about doing a preflash right before the shot....either with a flahs or a torchlight....

Using flash on indirect bounce also helps........

Basically the red-eye flash method is used to close the iris before the actual flash is fired.

Seriously, I never get a red eye with 5600HS before leh..

Nope. But you have brought up something else.

Raised or not, the amount of light that comes back from the subject and captured by the camera should be the same when using TTL.

Cheers!

Aiyoh! So that was what UY79 meant by angle.... that's not changing the angle of the flash wrt to the lens.... it's raising the flash height above the lens (i.e. placing it off axis) reduces red-eye... which is also why a flash bracket is the best option.... and also why the top of the range lens are always taller than the lower end ones...

It is deteremined by angle and not by elevation. Even a hammerhead flash will get redeye if the person is far enough.

Its the angle formed between the flash and and the lens at the pt of the subject.

Buyers of D7D better stick with it after paying about 2700 $ (this is an estimate from a CSer). It is not cheapo toy for an amateur or family photographer. If you're making money out of it or if you're a real enthusiast, then it is different story.

Is it really worth spending 1500$ more on top of A2 to get slightly sharper (if you print larger than A4, and less noisy pictures at high ISO) ? Usually DSLRs with interchangeable lens come with many disadvantages if you compare with DSLRs with fixed lens.

Do we buy DSLRs with interchangeable lens just for showing off? We have been to the Singapore fireworks festival with a couple of friends some with interchangeable lens DSLRs (for example 30D, D100) and with some non-interchangeable lens DSLRs (for example A2). The show lasted only for 6-7 minutes. The interchange-lens DSLR owners had hard time adjusting their cameras as some cameras were missing after-shot preview feature, they had to use the viewfinder, some used their existing old lenses which didn't give wide angle on the DLSR (1.5x zoom crop) and missed a lot of shots because of that.

Issues with more noise of fixed-lend SLRs? For shutter speeds below 10 secs, you don't get massive noise. Most noise cleaning software is below 100 SGD anyway. Usually you have to enlarge the photo to see the difference between interchangeable DSLR and fixed DSLR.

But when you miss the shot, it is gone... Wait for the next year...

Also I noticed that many interchangeable-lens DSLR owners don't feel like carrying that big bag around when they go out. They just take their old 3MP 3X optical zoom 35-105mm camera.

My 2c.
