Q:Is your camera more important or the photo more important ?

Don't bluff yourself.
Most of us take photos that are lousily taken, have absolutely no value to anyone else and of events that are not once in lifetime or earthshaking.
The camera is important. The photos are not.


(EDIT - this is to tell you that occasions like the one below is a one in a million chance which normal people in everyday life is unlikely to come across)
You are not Nick Ut who was in the right place and the right time and (maybe) risked his life to take this important photo to tell the whole world of US violations against villagers and civilians in Vietnam War.

1. depends on whether i need to stay clean for the rest of the day before i can change up and if the photo is worth the trouble and cannot be taken without not lying down.

2, depends on how u phrase it
- in terms of worth and ownership, photo is always more important as that is the outcome.
- in terms of what u can afford to lose, 1 photo or 1 camera - of cos, photo. camera still can shoot many more photos. that is unless the photo cost and can sell more than the camera.

3. mostly yes, but no duckling in the egg kind of stuff.

it depend on the "value" of the photo. Most (or probably all) of the time (for me) the value of the camera is still higher than that of the photo.

if you are saying taking photo in a wet or harsh environment, I will still attempt to do it with the necessary protection for the camera. Sometimes, an umbrella might do.

you just have to be ready for it loh.... you won't know till it "unfold" before you.... having a bit of intuition might help....
this is why having that olympus tough series pns looks attractive to me

with a camera like this, I can shoot in, on and under the sea, in the mud, in the snow, off riding bicycle..... etc... with little worry I can't shoot with it again.... so that I can just focus on getting the shot.

Wiping mud off my D700 and 24-70 now. Also just washed my camera bag with pressure spray to get rid of all the mud. Jeans and shoes also muddy.

Another year or two later, the D700 will be outdated and sold off at an expected depreciation.

The photos it made would still generate interest, income, sales and marketing opportunities for the photographer for several more years, maybe infinite. For the private client, it could mean generations of record and fond memories of love and family, for the commercial client, it could mean better brand identity, exposure and profits.

For the people who baby their cameras in a bed of soft feathers, they sell off their mint-condition camera years later and get back some money. Maybe they made some photos. They upgrade their camera and the process repeats.
