Purchase from BH Photo

Today I had a horrible experience with BH.
We regret your dissatisfaction. We require a legible image of both sides of your credit card if it was issued by a non-USA bank but only the first time you use that particular card to place an order with is. This safe and effective method helps deter credit card fraud and identity theft. We have employed this system for more than a decade. It's effective and unintrusive and I do not know of any customer who's complied and then had cause to regret doing so.

We live in an era of rampant credit card fraud and identity theft and responsible retailers are bound both ethically and by agreements signed with our merchant banks to do what's possible to deter this type of piracy.

This verification process protects you from the pirate who thinks he can shop with us freely at your unsuspecting expense. It also helps ensure that merchandise you ordered and paid for ends up in your hands and not in those of some clever opportunist.

As banks make more and more outlandish promises of security to current and prospective card holders they make more and more demands on retailers to ensure this security. This is particularly true for so-called card-absent transaction including mail/phone/web purchases. Until some clever person figures out a way to abolish card fraud and identity theft, you'll see more and more of this. Stores which don't exercise safe, prudent, & effective security measures are simply gambling they won't become the unwitting vehicle by which some clever pirate abuses YOUR accounts.

While I understand that it's our job to make your shopping experience as painless and efficient as possible, part of that process is ensuring we don't unwittingly allow you to become victimized through our carelessness or nonfeasance.

How ya know that someone was upset with your service?

It would be unseemly for me to tout B&H, but I feel it's okay to direct you here, where our continual 9+/10 rating speaks for itself.

If you buy a lens with the manufacturer's warranty you should get reciprocal coverage from authorized repair facilities where you are. If you buy the "grey market" version (labeled IMP on our site) you will not.

You may also want to consider an aftermarket warranty from Sagemax which does offer both internat'l coverage and a wider breadth of coverage than the manufacturer's warranty.

In short...the Canon USA Warranty card for lenses are not valid to use locally....right ?

USA Sets bought from B&H - Canon Singapore will honour the international warranty for 12 months (not 6 months, not sure where the info is from) - keep receipt and warranty card.

Import Sets bought from B&H - Equivalent to buying grey sets locally - No manufacturer's warranty.

I've always bought USA Sets - of the 5 lenses I've purchased from B&H, I have sent 2 to Canon Singapore for servicing and fixing before and the 12-months International Warranty was honoured - no questions asked.

Exactly! All lenses still come from the same factory.

In short...the Canon USA Warranty card for lenses are not valid to use locally....right ?

As far as I know lens warranties ARE reciprocally honored.

I would like to recount my experience with B&H Photo.

I placed online order for 300 f2.8 using my Citibank VISA credit card.

A couple of days later, B&H emailed me:

"Please be advised that we were unable to verify your credit card information for the order you placed and thus your credit card has been refunded."

I checked with Citibank Singapore on what happened. The payment went thru and is reflected on my internet banking bill even.

I phoned B&H to understand the situation better. They can only say what they wrote in the email. It was puzzling that the money went thru and they claimed that they can't verify my Citibank VISA credit card!!!!!!

B&H also couldn't tell me anything else I can do on the credit card payment, no taking photo of credit card or whatsoever, just "Please be advised that we were unable to verify your credit card information for the order you placed and thus your credit card has been refunded."

This is not the end of the story. Remember my credit card is in SGD and B&H is USD. When the money is paid, Citibank/VISA converts from SGD to USD at that time, I am essentially buying USD. When refunded, they convert from USD to SGD, I am selling USD. Naturally there is a difference due to buy and sell rate and also the difference in forex at 2 different time. So there is a LOSS of a few hundreds due to the refund!!!!!

I was really frustrated! I regreted placing order on B&H Photo!

Good thing I have a Relationship Manager at Citibank that I could escalate to. Eventually Citibank did a mechant dispute and got back the forex loss.

This is my personal experience and there is no prize for guessing if I will ever buy anything from B&H Photo again.

many strange practices. The last time I was in Paris shopping for perfume, in the end cannot pay with CC because they wanted me to either key in a pin number (alamak, Singapore cards where got ...?) or show them my passport which I did not have. Sephora.

A suggestion, buy via the concierge services ie. Comgateway, VPost ? Probably not worth it then.

Strange, bought some stuff over the years from BH, in fact did a combined purchase of 4 lenses with my friend about 2 years ago. Things went without any issues, in fact items came in within 5-6 days of purchase.

I guess its always difficult to maintain a high level of service when traffic is so high ? :dunno:

And outside of photography, its even more frustrating that many websites refuse to ship to Singapore, when South Korea and Japan is on their list! When .. a couple of years ago, I did buy stuff from them !

So perhaps there is some issues they have encountered with either the credit cards here or the postal service.

Speaking of which, for those who might use the UK Royal Mail, please be mindful, I've lost items through them once, and another friend too, and heard of another case. So, if there are alternatives, take them. Saves plenty of heart pain and frustration.

Bought from B&H before. No hassles. I am an avid internet shopper, including eBay, but I never had any problems with B&H before.

Could it be your credit rating?

Perhaps you can start by ordering a small item. Once the first order goes through successfully, the next time when you order an expensive item it tends to go easier.

Just 10 years ago a lot of US companies do not ship to Singapore as we are considered a "high-risk" country for credit card fraud!

I bought items from BH Photo and I think they are very reliable and hassle-free. Two thumbs up. However, when are you guys stocking up on Lee filters?

Oh btw, shouldn't this be in Consumer's Corner?

Of course we regret your inconvenience and dissatisfaction. Often the information we're permitted to reveal under these circumstances is severely limited by the bank which issued the credit card and by our merchant bank. If the card has fallen into the hands of pirates this policy limits the information they have and helps deter their thievery.

Hi Henry,

According to the website, "Purchases in our store are subject to an 8.875% local sales tax."

I am heading over to NY in a few days' time. Just want to reconfirm, is this local sales tax the same as the tax if I order it through the website and ship it to the hotel?

Today I had a horrible experience with BH.
I sent my order on last thursday and my order was confirmed on Sunday (Ok tat is fine)
But on Monday BH verification dept sent me an email for credit card verification by sending them a copy of my credit card.
I tot why so, if they are afraid of fraud, then by sending the photo does not help if I stole the card.
Anyway i sent them today the scan copy with 300dpi resolution which I can read every details
But they said the card is too black and need to send a clearer copy
What the hack, the card is dark and the wording is white???!!!
I cancelled my order
This is my first and the last time with BH.........

Yo guess what, I decided to choose Adorama instead although the shipping cost by UPS is US$10 higher than B&H but I took it up anyway.
Bought on Monday, payment received, Tuesday shipped, give me tracking details, Friday delivery but I was not at home and Saturday received! Good n fast service! Adorama!

BTW, the verification dept in B&H was really fast in cancelling my order - 5mins!!!! No explanation or whatsoever why they need mine copy of credit card!

Unfortunately you have pay tax, as long as they are going to delivery to NY. I want to buy big gun from B&H or Adorama but both charge tax on any item shipped in NY :bheart:.
Which part of NY you are heading to?

The tax is fine. I was asking whether that tax mentioned 'for purchase in store' is the same as the tax if I ordered and send it to NY (tax quoted on the website).

Heading to NYC, and my hotel is like 2km away from B&H.

........

Tks for your clear explanation, I dun mean to flame BH but just to share my experience with other snappers here. I suppose paying thru paypal would have avoided all these unnecessary situation.
BTW, I was wondering whether BH could waive the exchange loss from the cancellation of mine order? I am not like the other pal who has a relation officer to dispute for him. It will be a nice service after all the not so pleasant experience with BH. :)

Tax will be the same.

we are considered a "high-risk" country for credit card fraud!

Doesn't surprise me. Few years ago, I bought some liquor from the duty free shop at Changi Airport with credit card. The receipt displayed the complete 16 digit credit card number and card expiration date. That is like someone writing their PIN number on their ATM card

If you buy in our store and take the merchandise with you or if we deliver to any address in New York City, you're obliged for NYC sales tax. If we deliver to any address in NY state, we're required to collect sales tax at the destination's trax rate. This can vary from city to city or county to county within New York.

I encountered the 'sent a photo of your credit card' process from BH Photo too, the process made no sense to me actually:dunno: but I did it anyway.
Purchase a Canon Camera Bag model 1-EG, arrival was on time and hassle free.
