It's the squelch. When the signal is too weak, it is not able to get the receiver out of squelch, so the receiver will mute the audio in such situations. So if you know you are trying to receive a transmission but it is too weak to activate the squelch, then you turn it off and you get FM noise (like your FM receiver if you don't tune to a station), once there is a weak signal coming in, at least you can still hear the speech on top of the noise.

i remember no food! no drinks!

and we pee in our pants for the whole 24hrs!

damn smelly, dirty n totally exhausted.

oh yes, i was from the era where they dunk ur head into a huge pail of water repeatedly.

ask for ur 'RANK NAME I.C NO.' n when u're abt to reply, they slam ur head into the pail of water or they gush water down ur throat. song.

i remember a few years ago, someone died after these fellas overdid the 'exercise'. the 'water treatment' really made me angry back then. very very evil n totally insane.

and the offenders, i know one of them. he's one of the course i.c n he's really sick in the mind even back then.

Incorporate such technology into our home phones!
No more bills!

There were talks about it but operators were not happy about it. The technology is such that if the phones detect that they are within range, it will hand over from the base station into peer to peer mode.

Basically the max power of GSM phones are only 2W and the range is quite limited (several km) and further reduced in urban areas where you don't get line of sight.

Edit: Oops.. read wrongly.. You mean home phones? It is not feasible because everyone will be jamming each other. That's what some Indonesians are doing.. They use VHF sets to communicate. Here in SG, you will need an Amateur Radio Licence from IDA to operate.
