Pros and Cons of AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED

The front element will not protrude beyond the lens hood, even at 14mm. So if there's anything which is in the way of filters, its the lens hood. Contrary to what some folks (and I suspect some might not even have handled the lens before or possess basic knowledge of handling a lens) think, the front element is not really exposed to the amount of "danger" as they'd like to imagine.

I worded my sentence wrong :( thanks!

For the record, I've rented the 14-24 a few times for panorama shots in yosemite. The huge bulb is very unsettling as its still very close to the front of the lens hood(compared to my 24-70 or 80-200).

As for filters, the adapter I used(also rented) didn't let me use it wider than 17mm or it'll vignette like crazy. the lens hood incidentally was not the problem as the adapter screwed into the lens hood itself(through a ring), so that did not get in the way.

I oso hav e 11-16mm usable on fx at 16mm, couldnt decide if I shd sell it yet..

If I tried a 14-24mm, perhaps I may b tempted lol

So ziess and voigtleander and Leica are Model T's as well???? I don't think any of them are bad lenses....The Nikon 14 f2.8D has no built in motor, is it also a model T????? So I take it you only approve of folks with "G" lenses and those of us with D or MF glass need to go elsewhere? Any way I give up,
Any way, You win!!!!! I don't have time for a flame war...I originally posted in response to daredevil 123's pic of his Samyang....It seems I crossed the "Holy Grail" when I dared to say that I don't need "G" lenses..

Cheers

Dude, chill!
Did I say anything disparaging a MF or a D lens?
From reading your other posts on clubsnap it seems like you have a chip on your shoulder about manual focussing and seem look down on people who don't.
I don't care what you use. I use what I find convenient. If it is a D lens, so be it. If it is a G lens or a MF lens I'll get that.
But don't generalise by disparaging G lenses. There are some G lenses which are very good.

I can understand when someone says they need the aperture ring, but I can't understand when someone says they don't like AF-S lenses because they have a motor which can fail. If it fails, you can still manual focus on the lens. I just pointed it to you.
If you can't accept facts it's your loss.

Perhaps they feel that the fact that it will fail in time to come doesn't really justify the higher premium you are paying for AFS lenses.

And I don't think people who get wide angle lenses only shoot landscapes/____scapes, so it's not as convenient and easy as ' just focus to infinity'...

Yeah, the logic of not using something because of "invariable failure" is just...... oh well..... that's his prerogative.

Not sure what your asking...How does the AF_S motor Hurt???... I did not state the AF-S motor hurts, but motors do fail with heavy use, I value sharpness, longevity, and reliability over what looks cool!.........If you need AF zoom for your Wide angle needs, go for it! The reasons I choose not to buy it are my own...I also formally owned the old Nikon 14 F2.8 AF... I happen to like small, and the prime 14's are smaller than the Zooms...The Samyang in particular is also about 1/4th the price! and In my book that means a lot! I am always mindful of budget vs wants vs true needs..... As I said in my post, I cross mount glass on alternate brand FF camera's for certain jobs...Having the F stop ring is a very important feature (to me) for that reason as well.... Maybe you should ask daredevil 123 for his opinion on why he uses the Samyang... I don't need auto focus for wide angle view, maybe you do, so more power to you...

I prefer to spend my money on gear that I find useful (for me) and If I save some bucks then I can do more travel (The money I save on the Samyang can pay for a trip to Bangkok for instance)... much of my gear is either old school, or not mainstream...But I can do nearly any job that is asked of me by clients...( 600mm f4 down to 8mm FE, and over 10,000 ws of flash pwr )...So anytime I can do the same job with much less expense its a good thing!

Cheers

I use it because I am cheap.

The 14-24 has its uses. Zoom and AF is very useful as it will give you a lot of flexibility in actual usage for more than landscapes.

If I'm on FX, I'll probably do the same... In fact I was thinking that I would have to survive a couple more years on my tokina 11-16 @ 16mm if I move to FX. Now with the Samyang lens, I'll probably just need to trade 1 for 1 for the 14mm MF lens (Depends on the market price of the 11-16mm then). The 14-24 will be a crook of gold at the end of the rainbow, maybe along with the Lee Foundation kit SW150 for 14-24mm... Omg, so poisonous....

I see you have your upgrade path already chalked out. :D
I like to be more spontaneous. So far it has gotten me bleeding money like crazy. Finance minister has banned all purchases till the end of the year.

Yah, next in line will be 70-200mm. Though not buying any other lens doesn't mean that I won't buy any other non-lens non-body accessories :p

The 14-24/2.8 is a kick ass lens. Bar-none.
I use this for travel, street, landscape. You can interprete it any way you want, it is still a piece of glass made for taking pictures.
How you use it is entirely up to you. You can shoot bugs, dogs for all I care. He'll I use it for birthday parties and house gatherings.
