The front element will not protrude beyond the lens hood, even at 14mm. So if there's anything which is in the way of filters, its the lens hood. Contrary to what some folks (and I suspect some might not even have handled the lens before or possess basic knowledge of handling a lens) think, the front element is not really exposed to the amount of "danger" as they'd like to imagine.

For the record, I've rented the 14-24 a few times for panorama shots in yosemite. The huge bulb is very unsettling as its still very close to the front of the lens hood(compared to my 24-70 or 80-200).
As for filters, the adapter I used(also rented) didn't let me use it wider than 17mm or it'll vignette like crazy. the lens hood incidentally was not the problem as the adapter screwed into the lens hood itself(through a ring), so that did not get in the way.
