yes. built-in flash is used to trigger the 580. its flash pulse fired does not affect the flash exposure in the image captured.

hi, i don't believe it is possible, cos canon's slave mode works via the infra-red light pulses fired from the master flash. the built-in flash has to fire to trigger the slaves. (same for any other speedlite like the 580, its flash will fire to trigger the slaves). however, u can set whether its flash exposure will affect the photo or not.

Interesting figure shots ... I do anime figure shoots myself but our persective is probably different. I prefer my figure shoots brightly lit and will setup my lighting (usually 3 lighting sources) to eliminate shadow casted by the figure where possible. Never used my external flash too as I use only daylight bulbs. Maybe I should try with my flash one day
