Primary lens for your 7D

Which would be your primary lens on 7D

I voted 17-55 f2.8, but if you intend to move to FF one day, can consider the 16-35 f2.8 mk2 as well.

What happen if he decide to go FF? sell 17-55 at a loss? I prefer to go future proof. Well it individual

Definitely 17-55. Bought it already figuring that I will be on cropped for a long time even though I have "only" a 450D (which serves my needs VERY well). With the introduction of 7D, I guess my glass can have a quality mate though it won't happen anytime soon. :D

Most lenses, if bought new, will have to sell at a loss.
Even the 16-35.

 looks like most CSers do not have much confidence in the 2 NEW 7D kit lenses (EF-S 15-85 and EF-S18-135). 40% would go for the tested and proven EF-S 17-55 f/2.8

17-55 ???

I vote for 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM for 7D, I think that is a perfect lens at 27mm-88mm f2.8 on a 1.6x crop body and is the closest equivalent to 24-70mm f2.8 is to FF body. Though it is not a L lens but the build quality is superb and it come with IS, with it optimal focal length coverage compare to f2.8 non-IS 16-35 and 24-70mm f2.8 L.

THe 17-55mm f2.8 is probably the best in the EFS category, a big cut above the rest. People call it the hidden L, but the drawback is its build quality, which makes it a non-L.

currently the lens that appears the most on my 7D is my sigma 150 F2.8 macro and the canon 300mm f4 L IS. works great even with a 1.4 convertor. woooo

Glad I went ahead with this one :)

Had a EF-S 10-22 mm works excellent with a 1.6 crop factor body!!!

And took wonderful pictures!!!

Hi, I am a newbie and wondering why there is such a price difference between the 2 kits - 18-135 lens and the 15-85 lens. I know the later is wider angle but not by much but price of lens is doubled. Wont it be better to get the 18-135 and another the 10-20 which is a better wide angle than the 15-85mm. Appreciate insightful reponses from more expert members of CS. Thanks

How come there is no 50mm in the voting list ? :bsmilie:

If I need something longer, then I go for 70 200 f2.8

Using EF-S 10-22 and 17-55 with my 7D now. Fast USM focusing makes both a great match for the 7D's lightning AF system.

My 55-250's micro motor feels like an old lady on it though. But it's fine with me since I seldom shoot tele. :D

For those who would be using EF-S 17-55 f/2.8, would you be using the EF 70-200 (be it f/2.8 or f/4) to cover the telephoto range?

Personally, I find 18mm on 1.6x crop (on my previous 18-200) not wide enough for my liking, very tempted to get EF-S 10-22 to cover the UWA range.

I am planning to get the EF-S 55-250mm for the Tele range. Cheap, light, IS and I don't shoot tele often :p

But.. 10-22mm will come first.. 3 EF-S lens would cover the whole range for me =)

I love my 17-55 f/2.8. But the zoom ring is a little stiff compared to the L-lenses.. That's the one only thing that I don't like. It would be nice to have a smooth zoom ring when shooting video.

Yes it's truly a 5 * lens in terms of value. Low light AF on the 7D is slow but at least possible.

Previously on my 1000D it was impossible.

and what if one decides to go MF after 35mm FF? True you can use other EF lenses when you have a APS-C but it doesn't mean you need to. Based on personal experience, my 17-55 was definitely sharper than my 24-70mm and 24-105mm on my APS-C body (450D), but those 2 are definitely sharper on my FF (5D2) than the 17-55mm on the 450D.

My point being? Different sensors render differently with different lenses. If there is 1 lens I ever want for a APS-C body, it will be the 17-55.

But of course, to everyone else reading, take my words with a pinch of salt. At the end of the day, it is up to whichever you prefer.

I think if you're so scared of getting a loss then you should be buying 2nd hand lenses in the first place. At least when you sel off you'd be guaranteed minimal losses (if any), and depending on circumstances, you may get some capital gain too!

A lot of people have this silly misconception that purchasing an EF mount lens means you're gonna keep it forever. What if the mk II or mk III version comes out? Don't you think you're gonna sell it at a loss and upgrade to the newer version?

I, for one, don't mind selling 10-22mm, 17-55mm and 55-250mm together if I ever go FF =)

I really don't think it is such a big issue.

I voted for 17-55 F2.8 IS USM. I am using this setup currently.
