hey guys.. just back from japan nagoya..
found out their 20D price is only 93000yen... less than $1400 sin...(with tax rebate)
and 580ex is selling 44000yen..about $616sin...cheap hor..
but when i tired to use my credit card to buy the speedlite, i had to go thru a long process of them calling the credit card company(their procedure woah) and ended up i got rejected for dunno what reason.. so angry.. tried 3 cards and all of them failed. So a bit of advice for anyone going there to buy, either change enought yen or use their atm to draw out cash.

I kind of agree on the CC part....when I was in Japan last mth...tried to negotiate the V10 that I purchased at Sakuraya.....and if I pay cash, they give me discount 20%...but with CC..they can only give me 16%...it's in their system he can't do anything about it....what the hack.....that is almost SGD$20+ different...if I know...I will bring a log of Yen man :think: So the moral of the story is...if you confirm want to buy stuffs in Japan...bring a lot of Yen....sure got bargain power one :thumbsup:

Japan is a CASH society - CC is hardly ever used except at international hotels etc. So bring cash - don't worry it is relatively very safe in Japan.

be in tokyo from 25 may. staying near Musashi Koganei station. any idea where i should get lenses and equipment from. I'm a nikon user. i see some of the price online seems quite cheap. Anything i have to take note of? any issues regarding the warranty(can use back in sg?)?

try shinjuku, ikebukuro and nakano. most places are within walking distance from stations. if u stick to yamanote line, ure quite safe to get all major stations.

i find that brand new item prices can be almost similar or marginally cheaper, but used stuff are cheap and available.

Ah yes hi tech etc but the japs are also very traditional in some respects. e.g. the standing of women at corporations (with some notable exceptions), geishas in kyoto .... a land of contrasts where the leading edge hi tech merges with some very old ... wearing a yukata to traditional kaiseki dinner after a hot tub soak, hand made this and that, numerous cottage industries .... get out of the cities and the contrasts stares at you.

Cash is king in Japan. Yes modern hotels take CCs but many smaller independent ones don't esp if their market is mainly local japanese.

No lah, using credit cards there are no problem. I was using credit card all the time when I was in Tokyo 2 months ago. Just that our banks block the card when they detect a large amount being charged to it.

You need to let the bank know beforehand that you will be using the card in Japan (or overseas for that matter) so that you will not run into the hassle of being blocked during a purchase.

I used my credit card on a one-time purchase of S$3000, no problem too.

And for all technology freaks, the must go place is Akihabara. There are many many shops like this one there. Just take the subway and you will arrive right at the doorstep of the "electric city"!

Well for camera and lenses you may want to check out www.mapcamera.com at Shinjuku. Their prices are good . They were selling the Canon 70-200 f2.8 L IS for 1944 K yen or roughly SGD 2700 when I was in Tokyo last week. They speak some English too.

Also check out the filters at Bic Camera or Yodobashi... you will never find such a range anywhere in Singapore.
