I think you should do a comparison of two different lens using the same aperture if you wanna check out their performance. Otherwise its mostly a comparison of the depth of field...
also, shoot something that has little or no shallow DOF, so you can show the corners and center 100% crop to compare.

Where was your point of focus with the 50mm? Looks like front-focus problem? Check out the woodgrains on the table laminex.

I focus on the clock.. what is front-focus problem?

f/1.7 has a very shallow DOF. The clock numbers in your 50mm shot appear less sharp than ones in the kit lens image (which at f/5.6 has a greater DOF). On the 50mm image, if you look at the woodgrains on the table, it appears that the focus was somewhere "in front" of the numbers. The nature of your subject draws the viewer to the clock numbers and hands. It just appeared to me that the numbers weren't in proper focus. Maybe you focused on the clear protective plastic instead?

Do a few more test shots and like grado suggested, use the same f/stop and perhaps a better subject that has nothing between it and the lens.

can't tell much from a resized shot, and it was taken at an angle too. only a 100% crop of the focus point can tell if focus is accurate.
