I may have an opportunity to pick up a secondhand Minolta AF 50mm cheap-ish, but it's an F1.7. Is it work getting instead of an F1.4? The other thing is the 50mm F1.7 comes with an accessory ... a 7000 body :bsmilie:.

the build between the 50mmf/1.7 & 50mmf/1.4 is so much diff.

maybe we can wait for someone to sell 50mmf1.4 & get dynax 7D free as the accessory.:bsmilie:

What's different about the builds? Significant enough to affect picture quality?

Actually not much difference.... just get it... u are unlikely to need that 1/2 stop more at the moment...

Generally lens are designed to be sharp beginning at 2 f-stops from their maximum aperture. If you have not used a 50mm prime before, just get the f1.7 without regrets... For some people, 50mm prime lens is too restrictive for them and it ends up lying in the dry box most of the time. If you feel you use it a lot and need to get the f1.4 after using the f1.7, you should be able to sell it easily and get the f1.4 lens.

Hiee Pals...

I happened to compare the optics of the two and it looks very similar accespt the 85mm f1.4 has a different glass i think at the front for 85mm. The number of elements is the same.....well....imageing the 50mm f1.4 is given a full metal jacket + focus hold button and (D) circuit and chip.... probabaly will be around $800.....hehehehe

Where to get the 50mm F1.7 at $160?

Saw both the F/1.4 & F/1.7 at CP Peninsula.

Newbie question: under what specific situations do we use use 50mm prime lens?

The Camera Workshop at Peninsular Shopping Centre inside ground floor of the Peninsular Hotel, just behind Funan IT Mall and across the road to Peninsular Plaza. They sell 2nd hand stuff... the price varies according to the demand and condition of the lens...

You can use it anyway you can imagine ;)

Lengthy info :
50mm used to be a popular walk-around lens ( I heard or read somewhere it had a perspective close to the human eye, helps also that it is cheap for a lens with such a large aperture ).
Now, with the crop factors of DSLR, the 50mm might be a bit too tight for walk around shoots.
With a crop factor of 1.5x, it has now a equivalent angle of view of a 75mm ( for 35mm format ) which many says is good for portraits.
But... there is no fix rules that says that we must use blah blah lens for blah blah application.

In conclusion, it is popular simply because it is cheap yet of very good quality and has a large aperture.
Usuage is all up to you ;)

Cheers,
MadAnt ( in a talkative mood but with a fuzzy memory )
P.S Please correct any mistake/misconception I might have made.

i saw 2 pieces of 50mm f/1.4 at AP SLS, 2 nights ago.

50mm is one of the lens you should have if you do a bit of low light photography and also do abit of portraiture... its a very cheap lens for such a big aperture... I am still using the Minolta X-700 with Minolta 50mm f1.2 lens from time to time...

some people find it hard with the angle of view, however, because if you only have one lens, you have to push yourself harder to get better image.

It is actually better to go out with one prime lens and learn to make the best out of it...

f1.7 and f1.4 version aren't much different... if you do have money for 1.4 then why not... or if you can find one that is second hand, get it... otherwise, f1.7 is all you need. The lens is really sharp... well primes are very sharp anyway.....

Hi.. a small question..
I just received the 50mm f1.7 lens that I purchased from ebay yesterday..
It works - able to focus (AF) with no problem.. no noticeable scratches on the lens..
Is there anything else that I need to check on the lens?? :D

Btw, it's really cheap getting from ebay.. only S$90 with shipment.
Some used marks on the lens body.. I think I can live with it..

I think you should do a comparison of two different lens using the same aperture if you wanna check out their performance. Otherwise its mostly a comparison of the depth of field...

Where was your point of focus with the 50mm? Looks like front-focus problem? Check out the woodgrains on the table laminex.
