Price increase by Nikon, confirmed

with this steep increase, will Nikonians prefer to wait for price to drop or continue to buy the lens that they want?

Now is not time of wants, it's a time for needs :)

check this out - their latest financial report, Japan is the 31% of their sales... so... I trust the japanese pricing did not go up. Total Rest Asia is only 14% of their sales... I think Singapore would be less than 3%. So.. any decrease in demand will be easily made up by protection of re-import back to Japan.

this will change the 2nd hand scene. Am sure that the 24-70 and 70-200 will fetch a higher resale value now.

maybe a good time to consider letting go of nikon and join other camp.

I think it's just a matter of time.

maybe it is a smart move... current bodies prices will remain to get people into dslr.. once you are in.. you need a range of lenses.. hehe.. then u pay for expensive lenses :p

i think they will not move the prices of current bodies but launch new ones at higher prices (i.e. D3X)

I think this might drive potential buyers over to the Canon camp, especially for those FF users now that Canon 5D Mk2 is out and Canon pro lenses are generally cheaper than equivalent Nikon ones. I know I would definitely have second thoughts about getting the D700 if I am contemplating getting into FF DSLRs now with this huge price hike. Luckily I have gotten my body and lenses before the price increase.

depends which camp, so far no word if Pentax, Sony or Olympus will increase prices to follow suit.

interesting thought... you rather dispose all your current lenses (depending whether you have FX lenses or not) at some discount and jump camp???

I guess.. each consumer can vote with his/her own wallet... we just have to wait out whether there will be any future price correction

For those who are going to switch camp anyway or who are upgrading from DX to FX and want only FX lenses to go with their new FX bodies (if they buy FX bodies, that is), I think this would certainly be food for thought. If they already have FX lenses, then they are not affected by the price increase as far as lenses are concerned of course.

posting a scenerio here ...

if you have the 24-70 and 70-200, with the increased in the prices of new equipment, you can possibly fetch an even higher than your purchased price if you sell them now.
and if you have an older dslf body, and was thinking of changing. you might just be able to do so without too much outlay.
Better body, built in VR/IS, high ISO ability, live view, FF etc etc ... why not?

I have yet to seen prices of items getting cheaper. Normally it's just more and more expensive. Things that get cheaper are normally items that has a shorter shelf life.
I don't see these lens fitting into this categories.

All hawkers complaint that rice was getting more expensive when the commodity prices increased and sored months back and justified pricing increased of our hawker food. do we see them charging less now when the commodities fever and petrol prices have dropped? didn't see that happening.

Since price changes normally lag from one brand to another, those who want to consider changing should really think so.

PS: I am still happy with my nikon, but it's itchy when i see things this way..

Bought D700 + 24-70mm F/2.8G yesterday. Today went to the same shop to get camera bag. Was told lens price increased 1 hour after my camera purchase. :o

Talk about close shave.

lets stop purchasing , see who can "tahan" haha!!!

泥坑(nikon)越来越深,钱包越来越浅。

They raised prices here in the US- but those prices in the first post are incredibly higher than that even!:eek: Things like the 12-24mm f/2.8 or the 24-70mm f/2.8 are about $1,700 US now- almost $800 less that the converted US$ prices listed in the first post. I stilll can't afford either of them. And I don't expect a big enough "stimulus package" to help either!:bsmilie:

Nikon trinity lens doesn't come often. Replacement will only come after many years, maybe at least of 8 years, lens are more valuable than the digital body. Pricing wise, will definitely increase in time to come.

Truely and very surprise that the rise is steep. Also overheard that sony will be the next one man.

Not bad, I can actually earn money if I sell the lenses I bought before haha! Flip for a profit - sounds like enbloc and condo sales now.

Tough times.

But on the bright side cameras / lenses are not a regular consumable for us
( .. I might be wrong for some )
