Nikon or Tokina 12-24mm both is gd for me..

I only have the Nikon 12-24/f4. Have not tried the others on the list. So, actually, I cannot comment on which one I prefer (which implies that I have tried a few on the list and thus develop a "preference" for one of them). :)

The 12-24 gives me a 12mm (~18mm equivalent on 35mm) wide-angle without being horrendously expensive (although some of you find the 12-24 already horrendously expensive).

Go and google and read some of the reviews available on some of the lens on the list.

Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X124 Pro DX. Reasonably priced.

money not a problem? Nikon AF 14mm f/2.8D-ED
money is a problem? Tokina 12-24

10.5mm fish eye + software defish = widest & best wide angle lens for nikon?

Actually the FE should not be considered as wide angle as they are very different even after defish.

i see more contrasty image out of nikon 12-24mm.

Sigma 10-20 is wider if considering defished...also the image with be sharper around the edges...on a good copy of the lens anyway...up for the 10-20  it is that much wider than 12-24...try it

Tokina is good for the money .. but be warned, this lens is not the best lens for IR, it will give you bright hot spot smack dab in the middle.
Nikon 18-70 ismuch better for IR..

If money is no problem, go straight to Nikon 12-24. If you want to save almost half of your investment with an almost equivalent lens, go for Tokina 12-24

I guess thats the price for a grey set, meaning that it has no warranty.

Just wondering... how important is the warranty for lens? Do they just spoil all of a sudden?

Yes, you are right. I was told it's grey. But, accordingly, I can bring back for repair/exchange if there's anything wrong with the lens, advised me to keep the receipt as proof of purchase. And Lords said its unusual for lens to go bongus.
