Pre-order of K10D

I'm in Hong Kong today and they launch it at HKD7990 for body and HKD9990 for the body + 16-45 F4 ED lens. All with international warranty and NOT the water-good. Local agent also throw in a backpack that can take 1 body + 3 lens for those buying before Jan 31.

I thought it's kind of strange for them to bundle it with a more sophisticated lens, which is different from the US version. May by HKgers are more fickle? Don't know. Anyway, I think Singapore market would prefer to have the more sophisticated lens.

I asked around and most shops do not have stocks. For those handful that has stock, they are offering any discount and kind of take it or leave it attitude.

Anyone know how much the Sigma 17-70mm in Singapore cost? HK selling of HKD2700 (cash deal).

Hmm... I just called AP at Funan and was told not within this week, maybe next week, no news as yet! Which AP you referring to.

Cathay at Peninsular on the other hand said when I called this morning, either tomorrow or day after tomorrow. Guess we just have to keep monitoring and hopefully get there when the stocks are in before they run out

DA or non-DA, it's the same w/ the crop factor. You'll need to multiply by 1.5x on all lenses mounted on current Pentax dSLR cameras to get equivelent 35mm FOV (actually the focal length doesnt change but the field of view )

There is no obvious difference using DA and FA lenses on a Pentax dSLR camera. But DA lenses do handle flares and CA better (than most FA lenses). Just remember to turn the aperture ring on a FA lens to A position. The other nice feature on a DA lens is Quick Shift which is not available on an FA lens. Quick Shift allows you to do manual focusing at anytime you like even during AF, even after focus is locked


As to lenses, Pentax got plenty of DA lenses (all available at local stores) for your daily use, from super wide (10-17FE, 12-24) to wide (16-45, 18-55), mid-tele (50-200) zoom lenses, and a nice collection of prime lenses (DA14, 21, 40, 70, DFA50, 100). These can all be used inside or around our HDB block For a new user, I'd suggest to go w/ the kit lens (18-55) and DA50-200, plus a DA40 or 70 combo. Later on you can add or upgrade to better ones. But a kit lens, DA50-200 and a DA40 or 70 would last you for a while, and this combo won't cost you a fortune. If 40 is not wide enough, the DA21 is indeed another great lens. So the idea combo would be:

18-55 and 50-200 kit
DA21 and DA70 (one for wide, one for portrait)
DFA100 macro (if you are into macro photography)

That's all you need for a start.

If you want longer ones, wait for a year or so, Pentax will release a couple nice DFA tele prime lenses and DA* zoom lenses next year ;p

Forget about those FA/F/A/M/K or M42 lenses if you don't have any yet. They are hard to get, and optically they are not any better than those DA equivelent anyway. And DA lenses are cheaper and easily available new.

Hi Clement, the K10D is a great camera. I'm sure you'd love it. As to walkabout lens, it all depends on your shooting style. But I think for a start, the 18-55 kit lens should be good enough for most wide to mid range, and the 50-200 is an excellent little tele zoom lens. These pair should be sufficient for most users. Of course if you shoot indoor photos alot, a faster prime lens would be a great addition. The FA50/1.4 or 1.7 is an excellent normal lens but it's hard to get now, you can try the DA40/2.8 which is also a great little lens, probably even sharper than the FA50 at F2.8. If you prefer abit longer lens for head and shoulder portrait, the DA70/2.4 would be a great choice. Of course if you prefer wider, the DA21 is the best option.

The FA50, DA40, DA70 and DA21 are all fixed prime lenses, which means they don't zoom like the kit lenses. If you are new to this SLR thing, you need sometime to get used to them. But once you know your gear, you'd love to use and own some prime lenses. Actually Pentax has some excellent prime lenses, and what I listed above are some of the best ones you can find new at the moment.

So for a start, my suggestion is to get the two lenses kit (18-55 and 50-200), then a DA40 pancake lens. Of course the FA50 is a great choice too, if you can find one. These three lenses would be sufficient for most people. Later on you can add in some other lenses to suit your own needs/style.

If you can bargain the price down, of course it's better to get the dual lenses kit. The 50-200 is an excellent lens, optically even better than the 18-55. With the SR feature on the K10D, this 50-200 lens becomes even more useful (it's pretty sharp even wide open all the way from 50mm to 200mm).

If you have the budget, get the K10D Body & the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 Macro lens (S$600).

I'll still consider Pentax later after they've successful launched their F2.8 zooms and the 3rd party manufacturers taking a serious look into supplying lenses for Pentax in Singapore. 'Successful here means able to get stock.
