i just went for the course provide by canon and the trainer did say that when on tripod
it should be off

I was the one who told the trainer about this issue.

You can google for Canon IS and read about the IS.

Whether it's on Cont or Shoot only, the IS mechanism will be activated to compensate for shake. If IS is not needed to turn off, Canon would have prefer to set have IS on everytime in order to further "con" people through marketing.

Turn IS off when it's on the tripod.

Just like any EF lens, IS needs to be turn off.

If your IS is not off, your images will turn out with slight blur.
The IS mechanism will be compensating for nothing and thus creating shake in your images.

I am not certain but I am not sure if you are right. I thought IS works only to compensate for shake detected. If the camera is on a tripod and no shake is detected, IS simply does not compensate.

The several articles you read about turning off IS when using the camera on a tripod refers to those situations where you are panning or tilting. In such situations, if IS is on, the camera will try to compensate (wrongly) at the end of your pan/tilt when you stop suddenly. That seems to be the reason why some Canon lens now have two IS modes, one normal, the other for panning.

This was what I tot too....I did not read up on the mechanism on the IS, but for the Panasonic IS system, I remember the schematic is that the IS is a mechanical system that compensate the lens physically, so if there is no movement, the anti-shake mechanism shouldn't kicks in....but, again, I am not sure, may be need to read up more 1st.

Now, food for thought, IF my hands are very stable, but I am not sure, I use IS at 12X zoom, does that means my pic will be blur??

$799 incl 2x 512MB cards, 1 rechargable batt kit (no details), camera case, multi-card reader and "digital kit bag".

Does anyone know how much should the camera case cost ah? TIA~

Not really...
Panning is one thing - motion is there but you don't want the compensation.
Tripod is another - little motion but the feedback from minor perturbation may cause the internal control loop to go unstable. This leads to unpredictable IS assembly movement when no effective motion is present.
This is not an issue anymore with current IS technology.

Tks dude. That's cheaper than I reckoned. May get it from M S Color then. It's nearby my place and they're giving a pretty good offer. Either way, Canon's giving away some freebies again w/o the comex.

I can confirm that. Was about to walk away from the booth, but Salesman A offered 2 years extended warranty. This extended warranty is probably from HN and not from Canon tho. After re-calculating my sums, decided to get from HN after all.

But note that apparently not all the sales ppl are aware they can offer this (based on hearing other snippets of haggling).

Hi

HN prices are always negotiable. So, instead of giving a bigger discount, some sales staff may give you in other forms such as extended warranty. Up to the staff.

But don't be carried away yet. Do note that you can buy another 2 years' warranty from Canon (total 3 years) at only $70. Do your sums and see if buying at a cheaper price (at HN, AP or MS) and buying the extended warranty from Canon is better.

One thing about warranty from shops. If the shop closes down or ceases business, I think your extended warranty may become just a piece of paper. Same with Canon warranty but I don't suppose they will close down or cease business in Singapore.
