In front of lens mechanism. You poke the lens barrel to your subject and take the pic. But if you look closely, the internal mechanism actuall moves back a little to take the actual shot.

sounds like the G5 barrel twisting trick is now officially supported feature

i rate e S2 7.5.. but e S3 gets an 8 frm me. considerin e slight improvement..
it lost points due to e fact dat it doesnT haf a external hotshoe.. but e thin i sorely miss is e optical viewfinder.

Care to explain the function of optical viewfinder and external hotshoe??? i dun quite know these...
Tks

I thought it is an electronic viewfinder? a replication of the main LCD?

why would you want an optical viewfinder on a non-SLR camera?

in poor lightin, even on e viewfinder, u can hardly view anythin.. and oso for flight shots or smth fast movin esp. at max zoom, u haf to half-hold for e camera to focus.. or else everythin is blurry. but on optical viewfinder, u can see where is e subject more easier..

e electronic viewfinder on e S2/S3 is actually like wat hwchoy said, a replica of e LCD.. nt too gd for poor lightins and fast movin object. esp. so when in max zoom.. optical is like lookin thru a binoculars or smth to dat extent.
external hotshoe is for u to put external flash on it.. e built-in flash ainT power enuf to illuminate objects a distance away.

in poor light it is unlikely the S3 will be able to find focus. being a non-SLR, the optical viewfinder (the G5 has one) doesn't show what will be captured by the sensor. even worst, it is blocked by the adaptor barrel. so it is useless for macro shots and probably useless whenever you have an adaptor fixed on.

you actually use an optical viewfinder? which cam?

icic.. gd pnt. didnT tink of dat.. :embrass:
ha.. but recently, haf been tryin to catch flight shots. of rock pigeons.. juz e basic S2 only. no adapter and all.. but it's rather frustratin wif e viewfinder.
ermz.. my old A80. datz y i find it weird when i switched to e S2..

what's wrong with using the LCD? some more LCD in manual focus mode got centre point expansion (have it on G5 not sure about the other models). have you seen my fish pix? all taken with G5 with a stack of close-up filters, inches from the lens and swimming very fast. all done with the LCD :)

yeahz.. S2 has it too. u use manual focus? no wonder.. still learnin and foolin arnd wif manual focus. can hardly get a sharp pic. when in a rush..

actually now that I recall someone showed me an S1IS or was it the S1 Pro. My first comment was the LCD is rather lethargic. Maybe that's why you have a problem with EVF. I find the S1 screen blankout time very long. On the G5 it is almost instantaneous once the shutter "closes" (I write this because you know these things don't have a real shutter) the LCD is back on.

try and borrow an old G series and see if this is your problem. I think the G6 has evf.

I am a P A P supporter. heeehee Patience and Practice. I took 55,000 shots on my G5 over 18 months. When I switch to the 20D took a while to get used to not having an LCD.

If you want to do anything with light or fast moving things, best to use manual focus.

yeahz.. my fren says e EVF seems weird too. i guess it's like tis for e S series.. i know manual focus is better den auto. but in wat way eh?

does any S3 users know how to view the shots that u took?
