actually the theoretical discussion of what unique means, though interesting, is not of significant sharing value. i'm sure many here have said what they think, but i hope what i say here can get us all going in a more constructive direction.
there is a
thread of good shots chosen by selected mods in pose and portraits, which certainly picks very good shots, but it dies off probably due to high maintanence job on only a few mods who may not be able to be committed to it for long. i'm not sure if they need to ask permission from individual forumer to repost their pictures. if that is the case, it will be a tedious process. and efforts by the few often means a short lifespan. a good thread needs to have an effective workflow that is sustained naturally by mass participation, with motivating factors that is self driven, and needs no indispensible single individual to maintain it.
so i think it is best to be left to the discretion of forumers to post on their own. certainly there are enthuasiastic contributors here who may not have very good pictures to offer, or that their pictures is good but the composition is a common one (but still good and effective). but am i or anyone here that eager to spoil the mood by slamming those who posted not so appealing pictures or good pictures with a commonly used composition? certainly i think it would be good for everyone to be self selective and presents only original compositions. but it cannot be reinforced with a definable boundary.
and i'm more for a more fluid and interactive forum environment that is cosy and supportive. the reason why i choose not be a moderator is becos i think i participate better as a normal member with my own beliefs and to start threads in a manner that is more at ease and less stringent. i'm sure we have seen some of the post your best so and so threads, which can get boring if there is a lot of not really appealing pictures that is however the pride of the picture's owners (which i feel we shall not slam a contributor). It is also not wrong for some here to urge others to post better pictures for i also do not wish the thread to be ladden with uninteresting pictures. so what's best? i can only say, if you have really good pictures, post here. if you have none, encourage the others (due to the categorisation of galleries and a lack of a "general" subforum, this thread is probably going to be unaware to masters of most other genres. so spread the news and get the masters in... though i expect them to be tolerant) whom you see good compositions to post here. or if one have posted something not so good, you can at any time take discretion to delete them and streamline the thread, BUT at a later time, post up some really good ones. these are all just suggestions which again i say, i leave it an "open-source" thread instead of setting guidelines. the purpose of the thread, i hope, is also well conveyed to all who read this thread.
as for discussion on compositions, i personally believe in pre-envisioned formats and i do pattern recognition. i also believe in categorisations and a deeper dimension of the somewhat seemingly very subjective nature of composition. unfortunately this is one of the less discussed aspect of photography, or i would say occasionally discussed but often superficial or very inconclusive but there is no one to be blamed as composition is often difficult to be described in words, or after description in words, hard to be visualised. moreover, few people like to analyse a composition in depth, which means writing a long passage. and i'm not here to force anyone to do that long description or draw out their composition, although if many does that, this thread will be an enriching one, even for me.
composition needs to be drawn out to show how they work, which is hard to do on computer, but very effective in communication once done. i may illustrate this further with some examples though, will try to...
once drawn out, it can be seen what compositions are the often repeated one, what compositions mostly turned out to be bland and ineffective, and what compositions are often effective... sometimes, the very nature of the subject and the environment determines the type of compositions available, and often in that nature, becomes unique. one of such category is shadows and reflections, which is hard to plan or replicate (esp for travel, candids), though not impossible (e.g. for salon style, still life).
and anyway, i try to convey my message better by editing
my first post.
Just bear in mind there's no end to what's unique ... I mostly agree, to a certain point. :] Bear in mind something doesnt have to be unique to be a great photograph.
so whats the point of telling others to "push themselves"?
If no one 'pushed themselves' where would we be? Its what education / learning / development is. Challenge.
If u want us to see what u r toking about, show us something or link us to something u think is unique.
Im not exactly talking about anything specific, am i? I just like to be surprised, taken aback, think 'wow, i have never seen anything like that before' !
And anyway, you might not think it unique! as you pointed out.
I already apologised very politely. Although theres nothing wrong with debating these things at all (its a very healthy thing to do, question everything!), I dont think it belongs in here? Or does it? as long as its fine with the others.
Anyway, besides all of this, I have seen some of your stuff, and really do find it unique! love the grain. Do you / did you used to use film?
Stefan.
