arty or not ... every type of photos has its strength ... as long as its good we should appreciate it :)

joanna you better not go putting the 3rd shot in as your portfolio piece...you look much better than that
from a makeup point of view, I don't think the makeup does anything to bring out joanna's strengths. her bone structure is one of her strengths and the makeup flattens it instead (that's partly the light's fault too). a personal gripe for me would be the eyebrows, some people like the fashionable no eyebrow look going on right now (steven miesel, etc etc) but personally I think that accentuating joanna's eyebrows may help. and I may venture to say that the makeup is almost too tame, if you're going in a high end direction
I'm going to attach a photo by a makeup artist I met, this is what I mean by going all the way (will take it down soon though I have no rights to it!heh)

photography-wise the lighting has to be worked on too, it's too flat right now, too soft. you need abit more contrast between lights and darks in a photo to make it pop up abit more, make it more three dimensional
well hope this helps! only being harsh because you're using a very strong model ;)

btw joanna my friends here love your face
you really should consider ny in the future

The b&w tonality doesn't work for me. The face appears a little too flat, not very flattering (no puns intended) skin tone. It needs a more vibrant grey....hmm, how do I describe it....

Thanks everyone for sharing how to better capture Joanna. I agree that she looks better in real person and this being our first shoot did not fully bring that out.

Still, she's probably the one who has seen the most of her own pictures, so I would be happy if she decides to put it in her portfolio.

It was a portraiture session, meant to capture a very simple, clean image for portfolio. I hope that this would be a step towards better and stronger images for her in the near future.

Nice pics. Like 2nd pic. :bsmilie:

Thanks! It'll probably be a while 'cos I've got stuff to clear. But there's definitely a lot more to note about/look forward to for the next shoot. Thanks everyone for all your inputs. Very much appreciated. :D

since all many people have commented already i'll just say great job all. keep up the good work. i spotted joanna a few times in orchard i think. =X

hey sok!
valiant attempt!........ but still....i've seen better from you! :)

i dont know i got this feeling that you have a certain vision for the model but somehow you just cant materialise it.

i get a very cool/cold dangerous allure feel from the pictures you took.
but not cool enough...have you thought a bout a very light cool blue gel?

for example the first picture is super spot on! the feeling i get from the picture sends my heart racing! the shadowless light brings out the quality of your model...
and some how the rest of the pictures fizzled out....but the first one is killer!
the rest's light quality somehow is off.
go with your feeling...and you are seldom wrong

Here's my newbie's comments and I hope not offending anyone.

First pix, I like the pose and expression. However, the nose region, the makeup is not probably done can see markings. Her hands I think she crunched it too tight. I prefer softer hands.

Second pix, I look at it for about 30 seconds, then I feel that I see a slop from the forehead down to the tip of her upper lip. It is just like it is sunkun at the eye level. Could it be the effect of the lightings? Myabe the shadow on the right hand side causes it. Or just my eyes. I think I saw her contact lens. However, I would prefer the eyes to look slightly to the left to have some white on the right and maybe with catchlight. For this pix, I like the way she part her lips.

Third, same as the first, the makeup on the nose. The catchlights, one got one the other got two, uneven. I am not sure if this is the style, but take a longer look at it, a bit disturbing (for my eyes). Now, I don't like her lips. It looks bigger maybe due to her slim face.

Sorry for my big mouth.

now now.. when your comments are sincere and heartfelt without any malice or ill intent, you shouldnt apologise for them...dont be sorry about what you feel :)

I second that! :D

bwfilm4ever, thank you for taking time to look at the pictures and commenting in detail.

The "markings on the nose" could be due to imperfect PS-ing and not makeup.

Second picture, yes, the depth is due to the lighting.

Although it's a slight improvement from the Ranata series, I still have not been taking care of the catchlights when I was trying to get the timing of pose/expression/composition right. I usually take the picture while the model is moving through the expressions/mood slowly, so that it's natural and not stiff. I will work to improve that. Thanks!!

Third picture, for me, it's the lips that attracts. I find it very unusual and beautiful.

Zig, thanks for your support! :D I will keep working on it and hope not to disappoint too many times. :embrass:
I want to take pictures that are clean and simple, with a touch of class.
