Would recommend you try to include some shooters who are experienced at shooting portraits. That will be the best way to learn.

Agreed. Do plan the main things to learn from this meeting and the sub aspects of it will greatly improve the effectiveness compared to going there then decide what we can do though it's hard on you but it's also learning experience of being a leader

I totally agree, especially now that we have so many people. Unfortunately, I am new to this genre myself and can't provide this part. But maybe just a simple list of intended learning outcomes:

1. Lighting fundamentals like soft vs hard light, common portrait lighting angles/setups, key vs fill vs back light, etc. (these are more for strobists)
2. If there is no access to strobes, then available light considerations such as shooting in the shade, using reflectors for fill, etc.
3. Basic poses which can work for most people, and how to get your model comfortable to get a good pose.
4. (if time permits) Difference between shooting at various angles
5. (if time permits) Difference between shooting wide angle lenses vs telephoto lenses.

Any experienced folks willing to volunteer your time to come and share some of your knowledge with us noobs?

To all who asked to join, both here and by SMS: For this time (my first time organizing anything like this) I will take anyone and everyone and see how it goes.

But remember, don't expect me to teach you guys because I'm new to this too. I was hoping we can learn by practicing on one another and hopefully have some guidance from someone who knows what they are doing.

If anyone is completely new (like me) and would not want to look like a complete idiot (like me), please try to do some research on this topic before the day. Read a book on portrait photography, or at the very least (like me) watch some instructional videos on YouTube. Some channels I have watched are Matt Granger and Jared Polin (if you can stand the douchey way he introduces himself in his videos), or check out David Hobby's strobist website for those inclined towards flash photography (like me).

Also, I expect everyone to be grown up enough to not need me or anyone else to have to worry about your safety, getting lost, etc.

Latest count is 12 including myself. We will have to split into groups if everyone shows up.

For starters you will begin to understand the importance of knowing clearly (as photographer) what you want in your mind, and how to convey that clearly and confidently. As a photographer you have to win the subject's trust in the first 3 min you start shooting especially when you shoot in a pack…. appear blur, appear leecherous, appear indecisive means you get written off as some one that the model should focus on and listen and work her buns off for. It helps you start to know your craft and why there are locations where you do not park a model and shoot. If it is extremely uncomfortable for her, she is not going to look good no matter how edgy you think the shot will be.

I think you are absolutely right, but newbies don't have much opportunity to learn such things other than to practice it, hence my idea for this gathering
