Being poor is relative, and being poor doesn't mean you can't have pride in your home..
Kudos to her for maintaining her dignity and not just whining like a Singaporean ...
There's varying degrees of poverty. E.g., poor & unable to pay for heating during winter vs being poor and homeless, etc.
If we consider our local context we too have needy and low-income (nicer words for 'poor') people who aren't homeless. IIRC, recently there was even a single-parent family profiled in ST as 'needy' but could hire a maid. It looks strange on the surface, but if hiring a helper is what frees her up to work, at least she's able to struggle and work at being self-reliant vs relying purely on handouts.
Btw, Germany has homeless people on the streets too.
