OM-D EM-5: Black or Silver?

Actually the DSLR fraternity (the older ones) would have cut their teeth on very similar film cameras to the new OM. I am a long term OM user, I got my first one in 1977 and as the years went by I upgraded ending up with an OM-4Ti, a thoroughly professional camera with features not seen on the latest DSLRs today. It is capable of multiple spot metering anywhere in the frame. see the picture below of my OM-4ti and OM-D side by side

Just to illustrate that it doesn't have to be big to be good!

The black really looks very nice.. I wonder if it will age better than the silver. Too bad I have so many silver lenses...

I was abhorred at how awkward the black one looked with silver lens at first... but as the days of waiting goes by, it seems strangely classy... akin to the black Leicas with silver lenses.

The ironic thing is, I preordered the silver unit with and I believe my lenses will be mostly black in the end, the kit 12-50 (in black I heard they're all in black regardless of body color), the panny 20mm and 45-200mm.

So much for getting a set to be color-compatible when I will have no silver lens to begin with.

Now my fear is if the silver look cheap or will cheapen in the future or well, will possibly chip? The black set really looks very tempting now for stealth reasons. To date, I've yet to see or touch an E-M5. I wanted to keep the suspense until I really own one. I did not want black in the first place because of the leather texture, it's a typical camera color and it might look too pro.

You can spray it pink like kai

Me too. I had taken the black when I originally ordered silver. And i was thinking tat i might get the silver when it does come out. However, after looking at a silver n black omd together, i dunno if it is biasness, i am starting to feel that black looks nicer. The silver looks a little plastic. In any case the black is indeed very very non-descript. No one notices this "new" camera. But the silver bec of contrast, is more attention grabbing. Friends will surely comment if they see the camera. So far, my ferns hv not commented on my new black omd even wn I put on the table.

Dammit. Still can't make a decision. Is there a place I can take a look at both colors? I have yet to handle or see a real E-M5.

I guess many had pre ordered silver and ended up having black.

I did not regret choosing black over silver every time I use her.

My 2 cents is to compare if you have time (wait if silver is out), or get them i you really need them. Its just a color anyway. Aesthetics.

black is the way to go bro

I went with black. More discrete for my purposes.=)

I prefer black but I don't like the grip's texture of the black one, looks even cheaper than the fake leather of the silver one. :P

I finally handled the black one yesterday.

And decided to wait for the silver. :vhappy:

your choice is right. wonder when is it coming.
i am also waiting for the silver.

This could be the solution for you then...

I think I will pass on the grip this time. Probably getting a Gariz half case instead.

Perhaps trying to keep the OM-D looking less intimidating and smaller.

I suspect that the EM5 is the first in the series of OMD cameras that will all use the HLD-6... So I want the grip for flexibility. For example, serious shooting with my 75-300, it will seriously improve ergonomics.
