Pls, give suggestion for Nikon D60

There isn't really a right choice of lens for general use. Some prefer the image quality of primes and some like the convenience of zoom.

What you need to know is that while zooms give you the convenience of not having to change lens, they have more problems like small apertures at the long range and non-optimal performance at either the wide or tele end (not being able to focus well and losing sharpness), especially for the ultra zooms like the 18-200. Distortion is also usually more pronounced in zooms.

Primes on the other hand are going to give very good image quality but suffers from the problem of not being able to zoom. You might miss things that are happening too far or too near by the time you change lens or move to another position to shoot. You are also going to have the change lens a lot more often and thus, have more opportunities to introduce dust into your camera.

I think you should stick with the kit lens and shoot more. Only start to consider a new lens when you find limitations in it. Some people might prefer a wide angle to a telephoto (55-200), some might need an even longer focal length and go for the 70-300VR instead while some might find that they use specific focal lengths more and don't zoom much and get primes instead.

agreed!! this is the best answer! :-)
is all depend on your shooting habit.
my next lens to buy is a prime lens.... :-)

Hi all,

I'm also gonna get myself a DSLR soon, and i'm looking at D60.. :)

Am getting as much info as possible to grasp the useful details of D60...

D90 a bit too pricey - or else would have gotten that...

suggest u also look at Canon 450D and compare (unless u are a die hard Nikon fan)

valid suggestion. Don't rule out the other brands, unless you have some compelling reason to stick to nikon.
The 450D has more features than the D60... but then it also costs more. So you have to weigh out the pros and cons.

I would have considered Canon, but cause my aunt is using nikon, and she is "willing" to share her other lens with me...

so nikon for me! and D60 for me...first... =x

with all the comments, i shall control myself and use the kit lens first.... then decide which lens to get once i know what i wanna take with my D60....

Btw, why no threads specifically for D60? :P

i'm sure there are! :)
i remember seeing some threads specifically for D60 when it was still fairly new to market. I guess now the novelty is over ;)

i guess so.... newer and better cameras pop out just like that.. :)

shall not hijack this thread....

Your 2 lenses overlap?
Based on experience, it doesn't make sense to keep 2 lenses that overlap in terms of focal length, unless one is a fast lens (eg. 18-270 + 17-50 f/2.8)
You might say you'll use the all-in-one for travel, and the other for general use, but in practice this is unlikely to happen ;)

It would probably make more sense to try and sell off your 18-55 VR and get a speedlight (even SB400 not bad) with the $$.

ya, u are right. Most of the time the 18-270 is attach to the body. But I think I will still keep the 18-55, cause it is small and not heavy.

Ya I am looking to buy a speedlight, maybe a second hands one. Also planning to buy a prime lens...... too many to buy!! :-(

You own a D60?
If you're planning on playing with Nikon's advanced wireless lighting system (AWL), then I guess you'll need to purchase an SB800 first, followed by another, or an SB600 (as a slave).
In my opinion, SB800 on a D60 looks kinda unbalanced, but it works! :)

For prime lens, I got myself the 50/1.8 to try out the short DOF, but then I realize on a cropped body, sometimes it's too "tight" to squeeze in more then 2 ppl for a half-body shot.
On hindsight, perhaps a 35mm prime would be more suitable.

btw, we seem to have lost the TS (Phothar). I wonder how his D60 purchase went...

Hi!
Thanks to all.I've been thinking and thinking!:D
At the end I bought Nikon D60 with kit lens to try out first. And I'll upgrade the lens upon what I need.
I just bought Nikon D60 from Alan Photo Today.
Thanks again for all of your suggestions.

Can tell us what's the price now? :D

Have been using D60 for slightly over 1 year, hitting almost 35K shots.
I bought the SB600 flash after 1 day and upgraded to 18-200mm Sigma HSM lens afte 2 mths, cos the basic kit lens is almost useless to me. There's no hood to protect the lens from the sunlight when shooting outdoors and not enough zoom for portraits. The only good thing that it is super light and probably good for night scenery (of cos with tripod).
For me, I prefer portraits, events and landscape, so an 18-200mm lens will do just fine, at least it gives me min coverage for most shots.
Recently just bought the 70-300mm VR lens for more close-up shots for events.
There's no rush in getting a new lens, do more research and decide what u want to focus on and get reviews from friends as well.

:D

hmm...seems like not too bad a deal...me too got my D60 with kit lens for abt 1/2 year now...den added the 55-200mm lens. In my own limited experience, I find the pictures with the 55-200mm to be very good, much better than my kit lens. Love the 55-200 but problem when trying to shoot wide. The switching of lens between my 18-55 and 55-200 is giving me a little trouble, guess I need to practice more....tot of the 18-200 but just cannot afford it at the moment, considering the 35/1.8 instead....looks like a cool lens for my D60 coz the usual 50/1.8 cannot AF on my body.

My next target (not so soon lah) will most probably be the 60mm micro lens coz I would like to shoot 'small' things. But still that is something that will not happen so fast. Maybe in between some other lens might caught my eyes :)
