on the first glance of this photo, I thought it is a chinese water color painting or something. although the bird didn't has its wing spread wide open. this is still pretty nice shot..

Hi Longko and all,
All these nice macro shots can't possibly be taken using just the 90 or 100mm prime lens right? You must have used a close up filter to bring the focus distance closer so that its easier to manage to camera shake. If that's the case, does this mean you need to buy close up filters of different sizes if you use different lenses?
Thanks for sharing!

hmm..
it's macro lens leh..
the one tt i took was with longko's 90mm MACRO lens.. not using a filter wor..
dragonflies are a real poser.. they'll stay and look pretty and allow you to take them..
i loveeeeee dragonflies..

taking butterflies really requires skills (how to approach and where to place your lenses etc) and tt's toughhhh..

close up filters are not a replacement for macro lenses..

Thanks...from what I read, my previous problem was not stopping the lens down adequately but using default P mode...

Here are some earlier efforts using a Nikon 4T. I was about 10mm from the insect, yet the insect was still very small as shown below :

This is a great shots. I'm always a sucker for bird/insect in flight fhots:bsmilie:

Thanks Longko,. I find the bigger ones are easier as they fly slower.

does look amazing.. its possible lah.. i think he cropped out most of the unwanted, leaving 15% or less of the composition from a 10MP resolution... the trick there is about stopping down with fill-flash, then cropping and pp..

Thanks seafone, i think mainly due to the flowers and the plain background. I hope the weather could be better.

If the lens can do 1:1, it should be able to go that close.

 10mm is very very close or is it 100mm?

I'm no good at macro but I took this using my set up at 1:1 to let you have an idea how close it can go. No cropping.

Hi
Yes. Its that close! Luckily the insect did not fly away.
I had used a Nikon 4T plus Hoya +4 Close up to get it that close.
But that is the best I managed...sigh..

airconvent as a FZ7 user, I guess you had seen how powerful the DCR-250 + 12x zoom can be, right? That's where I'd mastered my macro skill. At my prime, I was use FZ7 12x zoom + Hoya +4 + Raynox DCR-250.;) It's like <50mm away.

But since I'd upgraded to DSLR, I'd grown a bad habbit of using 1:1 macro almost all the time.:bsmilie: Macro lenses really give me VERY GOOD working distance comparing to my prosumer days.

For those bro who likes to know how big is 1:1, I did a Tamron 90mm 1:1 test shots a while back. The smaller cropped is the original size.

If anyone is interested, I'll be willing to share how I take macro shots. I'm normally free around 12.30pm to 2pm & after 5pm (on weekdays), but must come Toa Payoh. Weekend also can, but must arrange the time.

For those interested in extreme macros, this is what you'll get with a true 1:1 macro + DCR-250. I'm using Vivitar 105mm (Kiron) so I still have a working distance of 60mm at maxed.

:bsmilie: If you encouraged her a bit more, think she'll get livetofly's Tamron 90mm liao. She's pretty good now, that was shot on her 2nd day taking macro:bsmilie:
