how r these IR shots made? juz an IR filter over the lens?

In his case, yes. But you will also need to change the white balance.
And maybe some post-processing adjustments...
I've trying to take IRs for ages, but it doesn't work well for K10D.
Esp. not with the Sigma17-70....
