I'm quite taken in with the 16:9 aspect too, not that the 'lil Miss below cares...

Hi drakon09,

I don't see any significant difference between your jpg and raw shots, may be the jpg shots are a bit more saturate on the colours, and the raw are more natural.

May I know what's your opinion on the LX3 raw and jpg shots, do you think is it worthwhile to take in raw for the additional memory space?

RAW will probably have a bit more DR and detail. I'll do a side by side test with 100% crops in due time. The above shots were more adhoc, casual shooting rather than a bona fide test, and the scenes didn't really stretch the camera in terms of DR or detail.

Regarding RAW vs JPEG, RAW will always give you more latitude to push and pull shadows and highlights, and more latitude for colour correction, and at the same time, allows you to process it to TIFFs. My JPEGs are almost always at minimum compression, so it's no surprise that there is little discernible differences, considering when you process RAW you'll compress it to JPEGs, more often than not.

Bottom line is, RAW gives you that little bit more flexibility which IMHO in normal circumstances is usually not needed. However, that little bit of flexibility CAN rescue an otherwise screwed up shot, so personally I do RAW + JPEG for those "die die must have" shots, as an insurance policy. Basically if you think you want (and the scene requires) to squeeze out maximum DR and maximum detail from an image, shoot RAW, otherwise save that space for more images (especially on holidays!).

On a side note, at base ISO I really cannot see any IQ differences between DSLR and LX-3 images, which is a good thing.

Thanks for the advice on raw and jpg.
Yes, LX3 is really a good compact cam with IQ that matches DSLR at low ISO. Really enjoy using it.

Don't think, bro. Just get it and be amazed by what it can do for you, thinking about it is just a waste of time.:bsmilie:

This thread is just full of poison.

one thing I notice is that the AWB in halogen yellow light is not too good, results come out too yellow...that's my thoughts, thanks, otherwise I luv this cam!

Don't be too bother with the AWB thing. Most DSLR also have problem with AWB under such lighting condition. That is where RAW and custom WB usage comes in. ;)

Just collected my LX3 yesterday.. still cant figure out how to use it properly, cos havent got time to load the pdf manual yet.. wanted to shoot manual but dunno how to set aperture & shutter speed, will find out later..

Did a few test shots last night with programe AE mode, I let the LX3 do all the decision..

Selection by the joystick; active selection will be highlighted yellow. Clicking left once will bring you to shutter speed, clicking left again brings you to aperture. Up/down to change value. Clicking right would bring you to MF control, assuming the cam is on MF mode.

another pano from my LX3..
