Picture from RX1

Just for fun and based on your advice I tried to mess around with the jpg, even with +2EV there was too little detail in the shadows and the sky was completely blown. Next I copied in my RAW adjustment settings to the JPG and it looked pretty terrible, there were artefacts everywhere and it just looked forced, I toned some of the settings down and in the end I got about 60% of the way between original and the raw image I posted with some artefacts in the bokeh (though on the bike it was ok). Overall there was more latitude than I expected even with the jpgs (wayyy better than my old Canon) but for serious processing it (of course) falls short.

Although I do understand why Sony made the decision to go this way, for straight out of camera exposure I still think the Sony has a little too strong a tendency to underexpose certain scenes and this will require some form of compensation from the user

Bro able to shared ur edited jpeg. So we can compare it with the recovered raw files.

Sure, here they are for comparison. It is impossible to get any more shadow detail out of it without severe artefacts appearing. Old pics included, but I'll use smaller versions this time so I don't clog up this thread.

Seeing them all side by side now, even pushed the jpg can't even come close to the info from the raw file (of course this is not really surprising).

If you were really clever with the editing maybe you have about 10-15% leeway to push and pull from the original jpg. It will not touch the push/pull capability of the RAW file, not even close...not even in the same galaxy honestly. IMO with a camera with this good of a sensor, to make full use of it you really should shoot in RAW, where possible.

I must admit the picture IQ from the RX-1R is much nicer than the A7s

Haven't been enticed by A7s so far, still in love with RX1. Enjoy your camera and have a joyous Christmas!

The greatest Christmas gift of all

Currently drooling over this camera :)

Stop drooling... I LOVE mine.... best and most fun camera Ive bought this decade! :)

Also the first cam thats allowed me to leave a big DSLR at home on a holiday.

( Ive shot the Nikon D200, D300, D3S, Fuji X100, Leica M9-P )

Can I check if the RX1/R can change the size of the AF focus box? I was playing with it at wisma and it seems that the size cannot change. Can I get confirmation? Thanks

Are you tempted to get the RX1R too?

To all those with this camera still... I have been using the rx1r without the evf and is still thinking of getting one. Just the price is still making me think twice. Tried a7 but not the a7r, nice to use with the evf but the shutter sound is so loud. So my question here is, how is the experience with the evf so far?

The EVF is currently one of the best out there in terms of resolution and refresh rate as there is no noticeable lag... Definitely a must to have and its tiltable which i find it quite useful. Too bad a7r evf is fixed and have to use tilty screen..

Tempted to buy the RX1R now and getting some quotes. But have to hold off the purchase till Mar due to budget and missing the current deal on the Sony promotion.

Can always check the marketplace.... There are those offloading for an upgrade to a7/r

Yup. Pretty tempted. Already have the 5T and 7. Like the form factor. Just dun like the price of it brand new. Still too expensive. That's why I pulled the trigger so quickly on the A7.

But the IQ is fantastic.
