pics of tokina 11-16 mm in action at f/2.8?

A couple of candid street shots. Pictures shown are downloaded from the camera without any enhancement. With this lens, I can cover much more action with a single shot. Notice that the sweet colours of the S5 Pro is maintained with this lens.

Not to rain on anyone's parade but i was dead set on getting this lens too until i saw that the minimum focus distance was quite a lot further than the Canon 10-22. I'm looking not only to 'fit more stuff' into a shot, but find a UWA that could focus closely to exaggerate the effect of using a UWA creativey.

The above shows the difference. Does anyone miss this 'effect' on their Tokina's?

I think how u use it 'creatively' really depends on so many factors.
To 'fit more stuff' into a shot is surely not the main reason many uses this lens.
Personally the reason I bought it is because of quite a few photos I see on flickr group.eg. below. Of course one is f2.8, so not comparing apples to apples..:)

redmonsoon,
thanks for the links, really nice shots and shows creative use of UWA. Here's what inspired me to get a ultra wide angle lens

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/how-to-use-ultra-wide-lenses.htm

Specifically scroll down about half way down the page till you get to 'Get Close!' Love that effect which i see is also employed on most of the links u gave.

Thks for above link, no seen that, I tink his ist sentence says it all..lol
"Ultrawides are not for "getting it all in."
I'm learning to figure out when & how to best make use of it.Otherwise its a waste.

BTW, have u guys tried looking into the viewfinder, as you walk?esp. through an underground tunnel...lol:bsmilie: The surrounding zooming pass is rather cool...lol

not sure abt the price for canon's version, but for the same price, i'll definitely get the canon version if i shot canon.

firstly, the 1.6x crop factor means the extra 1mm advantage of the canon 10-22 is significant. also, u mentioned the minimum focus distance, that matters to me also.

sharpness-wise, not sure abt the canon, but online reviews say that the canon has less distortion, which is good.

also, there's noticeable CA on the tokina. my gen 3 nikon (d300) solves this automatically, but not sure if canons do that. when i shoot film, i sometimes have to PP this CA away which is quite troublesome (contrary to most online opinions. maybe i suck at PS )

having said that, there's no other UWA for nikon that i'd pick for both film and digital usage. ok, maybe the 14-24 if money were no object, but quite scary to have a huge, unprotected glass dome.

for D40,40x,60,5000, i'll probably get the sigma 10-20 instead for the extra 1mm on the wide end and built in AF motor

Yes, for those bodies, the Sigma is probably a better option since the Tokina does not have a built in focus motor and neither do those camera bodies so you would have to be manual focus all the time. A couple of new lenses which may be interesting for those would be the Nikon 10- 24mm and the new Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 but neither is on the market as far as I know and will probably be more expensive (especially the Nikon). I had the more recent version of the 10- 20mm and liked it but think the Tokina is a bit better plus the faster aperature. Perhaps Tokina is working on lenses with motors?

1 thing I detest abt this tokina is the method of switching from manual to auto focus by the push/pull focus ring. It means I cannot auto pre-focus, then flick to manual via a switch.

I like that switch. Makes it easy to swap focusing modes.

Yes, Tokina's releasing lenses with built-in motors in the F mount, starting the with 12-24 f/4. Should be much of a problem since their EF mount lenses already have motors built-in.

Most people won't have much problem with MF on ultrawides I think :)

Hi, here are my share.

All three pics were shot at 11mm

I love the light reflected on the zebra crossing in the 2nd pic.

any user on 12-24mm tokina lens? can give abit feedback on comparison with the sigma 10-20mm and tokina 11-16mm?

Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 $940(w/GST) cash bought at TK photo technic.
2 years local warranty, canon mount

for some unknown reason, i can't post in the new price guide and the thread wasn't locked.

11-16 on a 5d at 15mm.

vignettes at 15 but i couldnt get the tripod any lower, :P
at 16 no more vignetting,
it's actually a very good fast wide angle prime lens on a full frame.
keeping it even tho i've switched bodies.

looks good on a 5D!

My contribution!'spreading the poison. Finally took the plunge.

Taken behind Boat Quay, my first time walking this alley, amazing place, like stepping into a movie set. If possible, go in a group though, you never know who you'll meet, drunks or worse..:) I'm so going back there..

On a side note, I was recently holidaying in Taiwan. And everyday I'll prepare my Tamron lens before going out;talking myself must use, cannot be so fickle..

BUT, without fail, I'll see something, and then decide that this Tokina is the better lens to shoot with... In the end, 80% was with this Tokina...lol:bsmilie:
