Sorry digging this up again

Ran this on my new setup with CS2

AMD64 3200+ 939 @ 2.0Ghz
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
2 x 512mb Geil DDR400 Dual Channel

1 mins 20 secs

Changed setup again :bsmilie:

Venice 3200+ @ 2.4Ghz
ABIT Fatal1ty AN8 NF4
2 x 512mb Geil DDR 400

1 Min 5 secs :bsmilie:

Interesting thread.

Can anyone advise whether PS CS2 can run on Windows 2003 Server? Is display card important for this test? If the answer is YES and NO, then maybe I can get a benchmark from a server. Just for fun.

I have this rig at the office that is doing nothing:

4 x dual-core AMD Opteron
16gb of ECC RAM
4 x internal SCSI disks at 15k RPM, RAID 1+0, managed by
hardware RAID controller with 256mb RAM
External storage, unknown RAID config, total about 1tb disk space but I counted it has 12 disks inside.

We have another similar rig (except it has 24gb RAM and runs Solaris) which is a db server. It is the fastest db server I've seen.

65s vs 80s, 2.0GHz vs 2.4GHz... about 20% improvement. hmmm i should try overclocking one day..

according to system requirements on Adobe's website:
Microsoft® Windows® 2000 with Service Pack 4, or Windows XP with Service Pack 1 or 2
1,024x768 monitor resolution with 16-bit video card

Not sure if it can run your server OS. But your server certainly looks more than powerful enough!

It's perfectly safe :bsmilie:

my rig's running a little hot i think. stock fan stock speed but already 49 degrees idle

what's your CPU temp like now?

i've currently only increased about 20MHz on the FSB. Idle is about 42deg, full load about 46deg. Wondering if I can go higher on the stock HSF.

2 x AMD Opteron 275 dual core 2.21Ghz, 4G Ram. 10 mths old machine.

2 questions,
a) did you click high quality ?
and b) how much such a system cost ?

cheers
:p

I've seen a 32-way Itanium2 server with 1TB RAM before...now that would be the fastest db server I've ever seen

if the rig is doing nothing, why not install windows XP? haha

1TB RAM can cache the entire db of my app onto RAM.

Anyway, my colleague has started installing XP on the rig. I doubt the PS test can be carried out on it. The graphic is onboard with 8mb RAM.

Another colleague has an Opteron workstation with 2x dual core processors and SCSI RAID and some 3D graphic w/512mb. Got to see whether he is interested to have some fun here.

dual cores helps ALOT.
I have got 2x 254 opteron AMD chips. non dual cores..
i ran 3 times. 23s 22s 22s.

i was hoping some quad core macs users would post some figures. cuz on another forum only 1 quad core mac posted and his figures was 23sec vs a dual core AMD 22 secs.

forgot to mention. not sure if 32bit OS on 64bit processors would make it faster.

There's a MARKED difference between a x2 A64 and dual-opterons.
You'd realize that one of the users here has a P4 2.8GHz and yet his chip could churn out a 70's timing on this test whereas an average Prescott 3.0E can only churn out close to 90's at stock.

The reason is that this particular filter favours memory bandwidth. Hence, the 2.8G running RDRAM's wins in this test despite it's high latencies (latencies affect memory bandwidth but not as significantly as the operating frequency).

For your scenario, you're stating that A64 x2 processors which are sharing 6.4GB/s (theorectical) memory bandwidth are equivalent to S940 Opterons which have 6.4GB/s of bandwidth PER processor. This wouldn't hold true for this particular test.

Similarly, the Quad G5's don't have individual Dual-channel (128 bit) memory lanes for each core. They're choked on this aspect due to the requirements of this filter.

It will run BUT you MUST set the memory allocation in Photoshop CS2 to give it 2.4GB of memory or less to play with.. Otherwise, you might find it crashing randomly.. The memory management module used in PS for Windows platform is long overdue for an upgrade..

If non-64bit version of Windows OS is used, you'll need to enable the /PAE and /3GB switch in the boot.ini file for the above setup.

oh m using the gigabyte 3d cooler pro... at lowest rpm is 33C at idle. Max is 41C. At Max rpm it's like 30C load at 37C :bsmilie: Doing 240mhz x 10X :bsmilie: Struggling to push higher as psu does not have enough juice :(

So no PC can match the G5 Quad as yet?

Looks like Entrope stills holds the record as of now at 20.04 seconds.

hmm...i think i should go get one of 'em. problem is that i don't want to tear up the whole mobo just to fit in the fan. was contemplating the thermaltake golden orb but to install that, i actually have to take out the whole mobo cos the fan stands has gotta be screwed in from the bottom of the mobo...kaoz.

=p yeh yeh! finally a quad mac. so the truth IS out, it really takes a quad Mac to match the timings of a dual AMD.

as for HDDs, i didnt mention about my drives, I allocated 3Gb of Ram as Ram drive for Swap file and scratch disk for PSCS2, total ram onboard is 8Gb. with the rest physical drives 15k 73Gb

Match Dual AMD? Not yet......but now me waiting for the DELL Quad Dual Core Xeon......hopefully to get that the next few weeks. Hope this can perform as good as the G5!

hmm it's best to fix outside the case so can mount the heatsink properly and get an even spread of the thermal paste :)

4 mins 48 secs.
AMD AXP1800+, 768MB RAM.
WinXPSP2, PSCS2.

I believe that there is a system already faster than quad G5.. that would be the Quad Single core opteron 2.8G. 2x2.8G is already 23s. 4x2.8G would prolly be around 11-15 secs. since quad G5 would be a quad processor..

however that test would not be conducted by me. I am not able to even justify the cost of such. so far keeping both cores utilized is already a problem.. having quad core is only going prove how long they can idle. :bsmilie:

anyway only the tyan supports 8 CPU AMD opterons.

I believe sun systems has already 16 way opterons.

on a related note,

how much would it cost to say have a

Dual processor AMD - dunno what chip
4gig
128mb graphics card

not from the PC world... just need some help in estimation.
been always toying with the idea of getting a PC box for raw processing.

cheers
