on a related note,

how much would it cost to say have a

Dual processor AMD - dunno what chip
4gig
128mb graphics card

not from the PC world... just need some help in estimation.
been always toying with the idea of getting a PC box for raw processing.

cheers

Did a quick check on HWZ.

AMD 3800+ Gigabyte K8N-SLI mobo - $735
4 x 1GB Patriot DDR2-533 CL4 RAM - $516
Powercolor X1300 256MB Video Card - $179
Maxtor SATA2 200GB HDD - $152
Verudium Vorte 430W PSU - $119

The K8n-SLI is not a AM2 platform, it doesn't support DDR2 memory.
Most of us wouldn't touch a non-enterprise, Maxtor drive. The Seagate/ Western Digital/ Hitachi SATA drives are a much safer bet.

AMD Athlon 64 FX57 & ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe ~ $1870
Kingston HyperX PC3200 2GB Kit (2X1GB) ~ $818
Dual Leadtek WinFast PX7800 GTX 512MB PCI Express ~ $2590
Dual Western Digital Raptor 74GB in RAID 0 Configuration ~ $608
Hitachi T7K250 SATAII 250GB 8MB 7200RPM for Storage ~ $185
BenQ DW1640 16X DVD±RW ~ $79
OCZ PowerStream 600W ~ $399
Cooler Master Stacker 830 ~ $369

Total ~ $6922

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ & MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum ~ $1720
Kingston HyperX PC3200 2GB Kit (2X1GB) ~ $818
PowerColor Radeon X1900XTX 512MB PCI Express ~ $1259

oops...sorry. wasn't aware that k8n-SLI doesn't support DDR2 memory. my mistake ;p

i wouldn't think that maxtor is really "less enterprise" than something like seagate. I've got pretty bad experiences with Seagates - especially at an "enterprise" level. I agree Hitachi's a good - especially those that are dual-ported, dual bearing in the enterprise space.

Ok, my turn now...

1min 23secs

P4 3Ghz 2 Gig DDR RAM (generic)
Total: 480 Gig of WD hard disk
PS CS2

Ha...ha... New clock speed. Added 4 gig of DDR RAM

52secs

P4 3Ghz 4Gig DDR RAM (Kingston)

wow, very fast for a single proc config!

I get 52secs with 3.2G DDR RAM and a Presler 930 Dual Core 3.0Ghz

I am convinced now that the brand of RAM does make the difference. I used to be skeptical.

The chipset used on the rams do matter slightly.. Especially when you start overclocking them.. You'll be able to see the difference in benchmarks.. Some ram chips perform better than others although they are at the same clockspeed and latency settings.. Probably some optimizations in the throughputs.

wow, looking at the pro configuration that you guys have really make me envy. Me not a technical guy so know nuts about configuring the sys myself.

BTW, I just bought a Dell system at suntec, any comments, enough for my PS work?

Dell Dimension 9150 Pentium 830 w/Dual Core Desktop
- 3.0Ghz, 2 MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB Intel(R) 945P chipset
- 2GB (4x512) NECC Dual Channel DDR2
- 160GB SATA 3.0GB
- Dual Drives 16X DVD ROM + DVD+/- RW with Dual layer
- 256MB PCIe x16 ATI Raedon, VGA n DVI
- 19" Flat panel (Analog)

Above bought at $1988

Is it worth? Anyone encounter problem working on a dell.

Got 1:25 on my system.

AMD Opteron 146 + Abit KN8
2 x 512MB Kingston CL2.5 dual channel

Not too bad... Not too bad.. considering that my CPU + mobo combo costs only $500+. :)

My previous studio uses Dell Optiplex for their PC-based DI stations. No problem, what-so-ever!

I used to have a Dell Optiplex GX300 at home for Photoshop work, and I have absolutely no problem with it. My only problem came from Windows 2000 Professional.

Currently, I am using a self-assembled Pentium 4 CPU unit running on Windows XP Professional and a Mac Powerbook G4.

hi, what is the timing you got with this setup?

There is always room for improvement but since it's DELL, you have to becareful what you change. Some parts are under warranty and make sure you know that. This system is more than enough unless you are looking for the top of the range. For 1988, it's a steal plus you are able to get support by them. Make sure you purchase the extended warranty as it's quite useful......

I believe that there is a system already faster than quad G5.. that would be the Quad Single core opteron 2.8G. 2x2.8G is already 23s. 4x2.8G would prolly be around 11-15 secs. since quad G5 would be a quad processor..

however that test would not be conducted by me. I am not able to even justify the cost of such. so far keeping both cores utilized is already a problem.. having quad core is only going prove how long they can idle. :bsmilie:

anyway only the tyan supports 8 CPU AMD opterons.

I believe sun systems has already 16 way opterons.

Aiyo, I think that's a little unreachable for consumer like us. You already mentioned it's Sun Systems.....not a consumer model. If there is a Quad Single core Opteron how much would that be and who is using it at the moment? Is it selling at SLS yet?

ya SLS selling it. made by TYAN.

Consistently timed 1 min 41 sec.

Is there a way to better optimize my setup? I copied the system info and pasted below:

Adobe Photoshop Version: 8.0 (8.0x118)
Operating System: Windows XP
Version: 5.1 Service Pack 2
System architecture: Intel CPU Family:15, Model:4, Stepping:3 with MMX, SSE Integer, SSE FP, SSE2, HyperThreading
Processor speed: 3192 MHz
Built-in memory: 1022 MB
Free memory: 582 MB
Memory available to Photoshop: 931 MB
Memory used by Photoshop: 80 %
Image cache levels: 4
Use image cache for histograms: No
Photoshop scratch has async I/O enabled

more ram.

Just an update: both server and workstation have just gone into production. So I better not do any funny thing on them.
