Another 2 pics to illustrate the speed & accuracy of k5's AF ;p

again it's a fast moving small bird with messy leaves+branches & yet the focusing is rather fast & smooth.

Another one

Kengoh, always enjoy your lovely bird shots.
This shot like really proves two things... for the longest while, old timer bird shooters on PF always complain that you got to shoot with manual focus because they say that AF cannot distinguish bird from branch and this shot just debunks that notion.
Secondly, given how active some birds are, being able to lock focus quickly and accurately is a must. AF is so much quicker compared to manual focusing and that definitely has a bearing on shooting technique and getting more keepers.

A bit of an overkill setting,

ISO12800 1/800 f2.8 (FA135/2.8)

In retrospect, I could have stopped down to f5.6 for much better DOF and still have an adequate 1/200 shutter speed.

I just love this shot... the soft tones and the backlighting just conveys a nostalgic mood like no other. This is my favourite kind of shot and I have to congratulate you on recreating the kind of image that renowned photographer David Hamilton is famous for.

A couple of exposure blends (not exactly HDR) using Photomatix. I think exposure blend gives much more natural effect than HDR, and definitely much less problem with noise and halos.

The rest of the series are here: Night shots at Disneyworld's Epcot. All the rest, except the other giant geodesic dome pic, are just single shots (no exposure blending).

taken using an 'OLD' K7 using HDR. my first hdr actually, had to use a tripod. any tips on how to improve it? such as some light PP? thanks!

I'm still just toying with HDR, so just some observations. #1 has bad haloing around the MBS, maybe can reduce HDR strength? #2 looks pretty natural, I've tried a similar HDR shot myself. :)

sadly the k7 has only strong and standard HDR, with the standard not seemingly HDR like imo:( though the newer k5 is able the fine tune the HDR settings. guess i gotta try the shading function in lightroom to blend the colors in haha:s

Thanks Denis, glad you enjoy my birdie pics. :)
Agree this k5 has given me more keeper shots, love it.

Thanks Don, but 300mm is not enuff especially for small skittish birds.

got longer lenses on ebay from time to time what ;)

you can try your mirror lens? or see if you can get your hands on those super rare pentax bazookas ;)

F ☆ 250-600mm or F ☆ 600mm F4

Shot this while mucking around with the kit lens on K-x. No pp, straight from the camera:

HDR 2 seems to be harder to use. Very often halos will result.
I usually use HDR1 and play with the exposure mid point. It won't give very high dynamic range, but it will look natural and expand normal dynamic range. Needs some tweaking with levels and curves though.

Ya they are super rare, I have not seen any of the FA*250-600mm or FA*600mm F/4 pop up anywhere for sales. Another alternative is the Sigma 500 F/4.5 EX DG APO.
