Photos taken by Pentax cameras for tech. discussion - Season I

My first post here with the K5 and K 135f2.5 wide open on one of my two favorite subjects, my cat Tami. The image is not as vibrant as on my old 5D in terms of color and contrast. It was shot in raw, and converted in Lightroom 3.3 and cropped slightly. Will need to learn the K5 more thoroughly to get to where I want.

You can easily punch up the colors if you want, under User Settings or what it's called these days.

I haven't used a K-5 or a 5D to say for sure, but frankly speaking color and contrast often has to do with the in-cam settings than anything else. Actually, if you like to highly customise your image, a neutral approach is best, because it retains the most amount of detail (yes, saturation destroys detail, as does higher-contrast settings).

Finally got sometime to play with my files. I am very tempted to get a DA*50-135 from Amazon, its quite cheap. Anyone can stop me from this poisoning, or suggest alternatives. Need a slightly longer range around 70mm to cover some street candid shots. argh. $$$$

Found food liao!!

Wow nice. Didn't know there was such a structure at RWS.

DA*50-135 is really awesome, sharp wipe open through the range. The zoom range is good for portraiture, the max focal length is a bit short but you can usually do a lot of cropping due to its sharpness.

Its also one of those rare internal focusing and internal zoom lens. You have no need to worry about sucking air or water or dust into the lens when zooming.

The main contender is the DA*60-250, it has a much larger zoom range and a lot of people consider it to be the best DA* zoom. The tripod mount is also useful, if you are shooting events and would like to shoot in portrait mode with a tripod.

Or consider it like this - this has almost the reach of a DA* 300 with only slightly worse image quality, AND it can shoot at 60mm as well.

In the end I chose the 50-135 due to the f2.8 aperture and its smaller size - I'm very happy with it!

No, I consider the DA*50-135 the best general use tele zoom you can get. f2.8, a comfortable focal length range, and good size (without the lens hood) and weight, and excellent IQ. The only alternative with very similar qualities is the Simga 50-150mm. I hear good things about it too, but I've no personal experience with it. If you're willing to go bigger and heavier, then you can consider the Tamron and Sigma 70-200mm, or the DA*60-250. Or if you don't need the f2.8, the DA55-300mm is actually pretty impressive

Yeap, all the above are the reasons why i am considering to buy it. But i was just wondering if i am able to use the serial number of the lens i buy in amazon to register it under the local(australia) warranty. Because Pentax stuffs are so expensive here compared to Singapore, cost like 200-500 more depending on the equipment.

I have no experience with all the * lenses, but coming from a 55-300 DAL user, the AF is painfully slow...
So AF speed is another very important advantages of the pro grade lenses, i suppose..

Yeap, i have tried my sister's DAL 55-300, she used it as she works at the zoo and she love to take photos of animals. I tried it between the range of 55-70mm, af is not as fast as my other lens, but i wouldn't rate it as slow at the 55-70mm. I like it cause its pretty sharp, i used it for a few streetshots and a photograph of the moon (handheld it on ground level). Whatsmore it is light.

But why i wouldn't go to the DAL 55-300 is because i am looking for the oomph factor a pro grade lens can bring. the colors and contrast. Can pretty much say its the ideal focal length for my needs. Just that i have to check if the warranty of amazon can be transferred to local use. If not, it might be a problem, just worried about the sdm motor, although i know it happens to only a very small group of people.

Thanks guys for your feedbacks! appreciate it.

Is it that bad? I don't remember the 55-300 AF being thaaaat slow, maybe I need to try using it again and see. But you brought up the main weakness of the DA*50-135, its AF speed is also on the slow side. At least it's slow on the K20D, supposed to be better on the K-5, I hope to be able to see this improvement soon....
