If you miss on the upswing at full force you're gonna need some muscle to reverse the swing quickly though.

lol #1. harder to miss with a big tripod.

#2 - who said anything about reversing the swing ? swing one whole round and hit again like a hammer thrower ! :D

okay #2 is crap, but seriously you can follow through the motion and use a top to down wham also. try it ! (but dun hit anybody with it yah)

Its a normal place in the mornings but at night quite a few bengs go there to play pool.

dun carry too much gear, and when confronted better be careful what and where you swing. Another reason why i yean for a solid metal camera body (eos1X). I dun carry any tripod or monopod. I fight for my bloody life that for sure and be certain the aggressor will not be worse off than me.

otherwise if possible, just walk away, smiling! :D

spray the bugger's eyes with those big lens blowers!

poke him where it hurts most with your mini tripod!

throw your spare batts at him one-by-one with all your might!

using your strap, swing your camera like WOnder Woman and hit him repeatedly.

When he's on the floor, trample all over him with your normal tripod.

Before you leave, use your lens cloth to clean away all fingerprints from the scene.

The cops will be stumped upon seeing his lifeless body.....

"He's got stepped and beated by a 3-legged thing"

"Multiple bruises by small blunt objects"

"Wait! There's a smaller 3-legged thing that attacked his... thing"

peace centre, isn't it beside paradiz/parklane where not-so-decent folks hang out? i would avoid that stretch myself.

Not-so-decent folks? Think you better not generalize too much, lest you offend some people. I used to frequent that place and I can tell you that these "not-so-decent" folks can be a lot better than the ones you find in Orchard or places where your "decent" people hang out.

Maybe i need to pack 1 more extra thing inside my camera bag.
##Parang##

They 5 guys then dare to beat him up.
I think someday must "ambush" them.

:bsmilie:.....

Buzz Lightyear: I am Buzz Lightyear...
Buzz Lightyear: I come in PEACE...
Buzz Lightyear: Buzz Lightyear to the RESCUE...
Buzz Lightyear: To INFINITY & BEYOND!!!

All this happen near "Peace....... Centre" funny :bsmilie: :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

Why you want to take picture of these "ugly" people.
Better go and shoot "wild" life and nature, they never confront.
Humans are the real "wild" thing on the Earth, we harm / kill each other for no reason, destroy the nature, abuse the animals......

otherwise if possible, just walk away, smiling!
This is always the first aid, in such situation. As long as you can avoid confrontation and leave the place asap.

1. Carry a monopod all the time.
2. No carbon-fibre ones, they shatter on impact.
3. Wear comfortable running shoes, so you can leg it quickly when trouble develops.
4. Have a flash handy, flash into your potential attacker's face to blind him/her!
(Especially useful at night!!!Remember to close your eyes when you flash)
5. Have an aerosol spray handy, repeat as above!
6. Place the police on a quick-dial button on your hp.
7. Avoid easy-to-ambush places like quiet parks, alleys, tunnels etc etc. unless of photographic interest.^^

But seriously, back while I was Taipei, I was stopped by a drunk hobo at knife-pointin He Ping Park (Peace Park coincidentally). He was kind of intoxicated, cause he was holding the knife the wrong way. So I gave him a kick in the shin, swung my 190ProB at his hands and then quickly legged it.
He was so drunk that after he fell, he just slept on the floor and didn't bother to come after me.
(Not recommended action for most people. When being mugged, it's usually better to just give the guy what he wants.)

Invest in a black photographer's vest & get the words "Police" sewn in white on the back. :bsmilie:

kinda agree with you... the police in singapore just simply bo chup... as indicated by my lawyer & the response from the things they did, when harass they tell me change number, dun bother, when beaten up, simply dun even bother to write my statement due to fact its one of their ppl... so if anything, just get your lawyer to accompany you lor...

Let me remember 1 incident this year.My dad ask my mum for money,(to drink, gamble etc...),i ask my mum don't give then he angry.
middle of the night 2am take out chopper and sand it sharp, purposely do loud loud think we scare.
So what i do is immediately call police.

Me:hello,police.
Police:yes?
Me: i want to report my father sanding chopper very noisy,it may endanger my mum and my life,we also need to sleep as very noisy, tomorrow need to work.
Police: So you want us to do what?
Me: (thinking my dad was already intoxicated) bring him to lockup for tonight.(This is also not the 1st time)
police: sorry,he never don't anything to you all,we can't lock him up.

I fed up so hang up,the 1st time they lock him up base on grounds that he drunk and pose threat to us,don't understand why they can't do it again.
USELESS! hate them to the core :blah:

As i was told by the police, they wouldnt do anything unless they actually see you being beaten up, or if the person has actually caused grevious hurt ( and by that i mean permanent loss of use of a limb, eye etc) or if weapons were used.

So basically, i have to lose an eye before the guys in blue will charge him.

zaxh81: i have similar experience as you. In fact, i the acutal injuries documented and lodged a formal police report, but the didnt do anything about it etither. They tend to want to stay out of "domestic fights"

Hmm.. wat a wanderful scene to do!!!
but then.. we got to be polite a bit first to the person/ppl talkin to us,
then if they still nasty, well.. we got "equipments" to wack them!!!!!!!! last resort!
so have a few handy things like flash, strong tripod/monopod, a small jack knife and one last thing, maybe we should get a buzzer alarm just in case we are being attack, we ON it to attract attention, Gd idea rite!!!

This is an interesting thread.

We have to analyse how those famous photographer like Henri Cartier etc able to go to the streets, get those nice shots without being "hammered". Of course, the culture in the west and here is different and there are chances that the locals do not like to be photographed. Some tips here:

PLEASE:
(1) Do not use a huge 80-200mm f2.8 lense and go round "revealing yourself" and shooting the people on the street. That lense is too loud!
(2) Do not go too near the person and end up shooting his nostrils!!!!
(3) Sometimes, you have to be thick skinned. If you are being waved at by an angry man, just smile and walk away.
(4) Try to equip yourself with a wide angle lenses (17-35mm good good), and learnt to shoot without looking through the view finder. Some of the best shots are achieved this way.
(5) Do not make yourself too obvious by standing at a location for too long, especially if you do decide to use that big bazooka lens
(6) For those who went through army, you should know what is cover and concealment. hahahaha.
(7) For me, I do not look local, hence I can easily be passed off as a tourist, especially my hawaii clothes and football jerseys.

some food for thoughts here.

I am curious as to how you concluded that the late photographer did not get 'hammered' in his years of street shooting? Unless you are his personal friend and he told you so.
