If you weren't shocked, you could yell some noise like "ooi" to scare him. You may have prevented him from capturing the image (on handphone camera or proper camera). Even he did manage to take the shot, he may be shocked, and shooked the camera, resulting in a bad image.

Most S'porean men seem to be opportunists, taking advantage of the moment when women seem to have let their guard down or consented to being photographed. You see this very often at car shows with car show models. When a model agrees to be photographed by someone daring enough to ask, hordes of others will come like vultures. If no such opportunity presents itself, most men try to shoot "discreetly" from far using a telephoto lens but they are not well hidden, and the ladies sure know they are being targetted.

If you dare, grab the guy's arm so that he can't run off, hold on, and demand an explanation for his actions.

A ClubSnap user also quoted a section of the Penal Code regarding public nuisance. While I'm no lawyer, that section does not appear to be very specific (and useful) for situations such as yours. Worse, Singapore has no privacy act (the last time I checked). I hate to say this, but legally, Singaporean women may not have much legal protection against men like that, whether they use a handphone camera or a proper camera.

Although I'm not in Singapore now, I'm very aware of the handphone camera menace. If what I see on the SGGirls website is true, it appears to be very rampant, and I can understand the annoyance it causes to women. It's worse that the commentary feature of that website sometimes carries immature claims of the woman in the image being promiscuous or something else derogatory.

In Melbourne, this matter of handphone cameras used to secretly shoot women made a newspaper headline carrying a full-page report. Men will be men, and their interest in women will just be there. Always. It drives them to photograph women. Perhaps this is a fact which most men don't want to say and women don't realise.

If you want to look at this matter in a very strict and rigid sense, every man with a camera pointing at a woman can be classified as a pervert, including all ClubSnap members, and myself not excluded. And if you want to be strict and rigid with the word "pervert", the word was not very correctly used here. The culprit wasn't doing anything severely abnormal (if you know what I mean). Anyway, most people understand the context of the word "pervert" in as often used in such a case.

the above joke aside, I still feel that to take a photo of anyone without permission and run off is abit bad loh even it not a obsense photo. At least smile back at him or her and tell the intention if the person what to know...

Been through this twice when the camera phone first hit the market. One of them shoot le just ran off... I'm super super mad. The second case, shoot le, walkup to me and tell me the intention. See the different?

Yes, I (and I'm sure other seasoned people/street photographers) see and know the difference.

If the intention of capturing the image is fairly honourable, there is no need to run off. I would also say that it's not only sincere but also brave to stay on and explain the intention because the subject (such as yourself) may still be annoyed and want the image deleted (or in the case of film, surrendered).

Photographing people involves more than camera skills (or the lack of it such as the shoot-and-run pervert). It involved people skills as well. People in public may not react positively to cameras (as very often in S'pore) and to run off after taking a shot only does more harm.

I wish I knew the reason why S'poreans are generally so uptight about their photos being taken. Did most S'poreans do something wrong and can't risk being identified? I'm sure it's not, but somehow S'poreans shun cameras.

If anything, I would say that the friendliest faces of Singaporeans ever seen are those that appear on Singapore Airlines ads (for obvious reasons). Next best would be the politically correct NDP poster of the 4 faces from the 4 major races (Chinese, Malay, Indian, Eurasian).

Personally i wont suggest making more noise, unless he's still on board on the train, and that you want others to notice you two (usually if you shout, the eyes will be on you, allowing time for the "pervent" to get away if the train had reach the stop)

one possibility is to talk to him nicely, or go after him and request for the photo to be deleted off.

The "prevent" kind of snapping right in front of the face must be disgusting and disturbing.

I don't agree that the intention of the person should decide whether the guy should be allowed to take the photo
if we're really photographers we should be praising the guy who rushed up to take the photo
remember the old saying, if your pictures are not good enough, you're not close enough, (or something to that effect)
That guy who rushed up to take the photo must have been driven enough by the need to get the image to take that risk, which is really making full use of the camera and its limitations.
Doesn't matter if it's a picture of a woman, a celebrity, a bee, or a chicken.

I think you may want to ask around more on whether this would constitute the basis of a lawsuit. Mostly likely the guy will just laugh and walk off.

What is the name of the guy who hides in corners, and then jumps in front of his "victims", points his camera, blasts off, and runs away?

And CS members who go Little India to photograph the Indians and Blangadeshi? Are they not perverts too? It takes courage to get close to a stranger and takes his/her photograph. As you said, there was something about the subject that compells the photographer to take the picture.

Just last Saturday, I was walking on a pavement back to my hotel from a morning session photographing market scenes in Shanghai. I saw a woman walking towards me, and she appeared to be unzipping her pants. Then to my amazement, she climbed over a low concrete wall with plants on it, squatted on the wall, faced the bushes, and pi! It was 10.00 am, and the bus stop was like 2 meters away with people waiting for buses!

I walked by, turned back and fired off two shots and walked back to the hotel. I had since shown this image to several people and they were amazed that in modern Shanghai, such activities still exist.

Am I a pervert?

If you think singaporeans are rather conservative, try going to the US or australia and pop a frame at them any day. The westerners (esp australians ) DISLIKE such activities because they are strong believers in their own privacy (An issue like identity cards would cause an uproar..)

if the person whose picture is kenna taken felt offended, no matter if it is using a handphone "on the face" or 400mm L zoom lenses "20m away", can make police report and will the police charged the bugger or not?

n if the police does not charged such casees, can sue the bugger or not?

An article appeared in the Straits Times some time back regarding outraging of modesty.

I think this was in connection to a local website (not sggirls) that featured very sneaky photos of girls in Orchard Road etc.

A lot of the photos were almost like 'upskirt' shots, but didn;t reveal anything.

In the comments made by some lawyer and the police, it was generally concluded that a person can make a police report and take action if the photos were taken in a manner that clearly outrages the modesty of a person, or is used in a defamatory manner.

In the case of someone discretely taking a portrait, or rushing up and shooting it 'in one's face', while may be a public nuisance, hardly constitutes outrage of modesty.

In the west, paparazzi are sometimes bashed up by celebrities for rushing up and shooting, or shooting secretly from a distance. In the end, the celebrities were charged in court for assult.

Perhaps you can get a bouncer bf to help you, but just don't throw the first blow, or get caught.
