A chance for Pentax to re-establish it's presence. A long illustrious history, two possible paths...
1. Alternative Leica.

2. Professional sports and wildlife DSLR. Better marketing strategy going forward.

A new Pentax Black and White only camera.

New B+W camera

@ricohflex, why no critique of this rehashed K3 iii ( with new b/w sensor ) that dslr is dead and how many cameras can Pentax sell when the trend is mirrorless to revive their brand? Or Ricoh has vast financial reserves to indulge like the likes of Leica or Phase one in the luxury leagues despite Pentax claiming they had done the market survey and determined that there is a apsc niche for a monochrome camera but what is the typical Pentax customer profile like in reality? You show love for apsc but not for m43. :D

My take is that Pentax is taking a chance and daring to be different and perhaps sticking to their DSLR guns when Canon and Nikon has thrown in their towels to stay relevant. Who knows, when the pool is empty ,Pentax may well rule the day.:) All the best to Pentax. Black and white art photography is a niche which favour fullframe and larger format I wonder if an apsc camera like k3 monochrome can cut it if large gallery prints are de rigueur which may be moot as viewing distance has to be taken into account but perhaps people with such artistic ambitions want to have a try at it but price of camera may be a barrier.

Will Pentax K3iii MONOCHROME save Pentax?

When this reviewer say it's over.

Is this the reason Pentax chose to do a Leica monochrome in a DSLR body as the rangefinder style body easily get out of alignment? Call it a smart and practical move plus putting out a poor man's ( or not really ) Leica monochrome. Do note Leica's original monochrome came with a cc'd sensor.

A small niche market. Even for Leica M11 Monochrom at USD$9,195.
Pentax Monochrom may be much cheaper. Good news for Pentax users.
Those who can perceive the difference may buy it.

Those who cannot just use their colour digital ILC and convert to B+W.
Or choose to take B+W photos on their colour digital ILC. Olympus Pan F has a dial to pick Mono.

Leica M losing rangefinder alignment is a red herring.
It is not a sound reason to explain why Pentax is making a Monochrom.
Leica M3 introduced in 1954.

An interview with Andreas Kaufmann says Leica sells about 100,000 per year.
If 70% of those are M bodies.
That is 4.83 Million bodies. From 1954 to 2023.

If it is true that M bodies easily go out of alignment and need to send to Leica factory to reset.
Then they will be very busy 24/7/365.
Which tells you how nonsensical is the reason given.

Some thoughts about Pentax k3 iii monochrome and what it's all about. If it sells Ricoh may introduce a GR compact version.:D
