Read through the review of the new Pentax K100D.
It is really a very good DSLR for newbies to start with.
I truly hope the Pentax photographers base will
grow tremendously with this launch.

If I don't own a Nikon D50 already, I think the Pentax K100D will buy
me over. :bsmilie:
The price, the body built-in SR system, using common AA battery,
up to ISO3200, ISO1600 is still very usable, etc.
Really hope to see more Pentax users in this forum soon and pictures post by them.

trust me , I'll join you soon  hehehehehe ( as a pentax user of course!)

I hope Pentax does well and not go the way of Konica Minolta. I tried the K100D at the fair and I'm quite impress with the performance.

Yah...Really hope Pentax did well. I yet to have a chance to try the K100D, but
had read many good opinion from various forums and reviews.
Pentax is the only chance left for ppl who don't wish to spend big $$ on lens with IS/VR/AS/SR.
KM had done well by producing a body with built-in AS function but sad to say that
Sony had bought them over and the price is going up for the A100 body.
As a Nikon user, I think no chance to get a body with built-in anti-shake function loh.
Coz if Nikon do that they will be killing their own VR lens which generate high revenue.

Let's hope Pentax can do well with their K100D launch, so that one day
I can jump ship if there is a need to. :bsmilie:

Some good things I read about the K100D.

1)Low noise at high ISO, almost comparable to Canon.
2)Reasonably fast auto focus.
3)Good pricing.
4)Built-in SR on the body.
5)Using double AA battery.

Hope to see a list of K100D users soon just like KM5D when it launches.
Can't wait to see some nice pictures post by K100D users.

It might be a little quiet here... but you guys have it where it counts.

Also better pray hard that pentax dun follow Canon Sg... we have to pay about 20% premium as compared to US prices.

Actually... Used Pentax equipment has almost doubled in price on average on eBay, and new Pentax DA lenses are so expensive relative to what Pentax used to make. With everyone talking about Pentax, prices are bound to go up. I'd rather Pentax be the small, cheap little-known secret it always has been, than the big, expensive company everyone talks about. I know it's a selfish thought, but hey, now I can no longer tease my oddball brand C and N welding friends how their one single brand new lens can buy my entire used Pentax collection of of bodies and lenses!

yup. i cannot afford the new lenses. i use manual or my old slr af's

:(

strangely, I think the price of the Pentax cameras have dropped. I have read magazines dated 2004 in which the price of the istDS is even more expensive than the D50 and Minolta 5D!

which was roughly when i bought my DS >.< ...ouch

After being an analogical user of Nikon reflex for ages I switched into Canon for my two first prosumer digital cameras
owning a G2 black edition and subsequently a Pro 1. The cameras were not bad but I never felt satified with them either.
Now I'm looking for a reasonable reflex and the Pentax K-10 looks as the real deal since the Nikon 80D is too expensive and the affordable Canon 400D feels like a toy in your hands and does not have a decent full size viwfinder.
The only thing are these romours saying SPARX one of main Pentax shareholder (21%) are strongly advising them to leave the camera market (see http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1000&message=18611096)
I hope they don't follow it since they seem now to be in the right path and manufacturing reasonably robuste cameras unlike Sony, Canon (entry level) and presumably Olympus (although I haven't has the E500 in my hands ) It would be a shame, because they're struggling to kkep it up in the market and I hope Samsung to guarantee Pentax future

yikes.
thats worrying.

typical... money talks - of course - but at the expense of real creativity/alternatives/options/future...

i too liked the path that Pentax seemed to be taking, so its disturbing to hear this...

simply by talking like that, as posts in that thread also mention, has wiped pentax off the market.
mid you, there is more to read in the thread, re: samsung's part to play etc, abe's possible frustration, etc.

now everyone knows pentax is under pressure to quit the camera market.
so, why buy a k10d now? why bother with anything pentax?

so - when the above happens - and camera-related profits plummet as people get to hear about this talk by shareholders, pentax will see no point afterall - those money men mustve been right! - and quit the market.

oh well.

whether pentax will/or has followed abe or not doesnt change the fact that sparx has made a very damaging [to the pentax market] comment regarding pentax.

Must agree with wobbly. Sparx's advice is really damaging pentax's potential to enter the camera market with a force to be reckon with. A co.'s attitude towards the product is very important.

Now it sets me thinking of the level of commitment by Pentax. 21% SH is quite an influence. And when there is internal disagreements, its gonna take quite some time for Pentax to walk the path of cameras.

Sound similar like another Konica Minolta sold to $ony

But, if you think of it don't we have we costumers still a word about it? What Sparx wants is us to be intimidated and not to buy Pentax cameras so that they can prove right before the rest of shareholders. Now, if everyone who has been waiting for ages for a decent, semi-professional looking digital reflex and -as it used to be the case in the past- has found it in a Pentax, sticks to it and buys it (provided the rviews are positive) things can make a complete turnabout.
If a qeustion of months , but I'm buying it. If Pentax left photography, I would still have all the componets of my cameras backed by Samsung. I don't want a camera market limited to Canon , Nikon and Sony and I think we must fight agains it

sigh...assuming its true, its sad when a corporate raider buys into a company.
these company has no interest whatsoever in the business except to see how much income they can extract from them. in some way, they are like the aliens in independence day.
I do hope the other share holders do not share their sentiments. it will be sad to see another giant kick the dust.

of course, if ever this company is put up for sale, I do hope either samsung or sony or nikon or fujifilm grabs it. at least these are big companies with muscle to carry on the tradition.

that might be fine for existing pentax customers. but thats like preaching to the converted.
but to survive, and to get more money for further development, pentax needs to get more customers, increase its user base.
if, as it often does, word of mouth gets around that 'pentax is not 100% commited to the camera market' - how likely is it that someone looking to buy a dslr decides that pentax might be a good investment? not very. why invest in something that might not have any future.

both nikon and canon have much larger resources and probably get decent returns on their products and customers. pentax's margins in the same market are likely to be much lower and so is that much more sensitive to market moods and changes. any kind of shift away from pentax will damage pentax much moreso than if the same thign happened to nikon or canon.

abe might be venting his frustration that pentax decided to launch new dslr's but hes doing it in such a way that he knows can be damaging anyway - revenge perhaps?

You guys just think too much :D

Some predicted Pentax would quit digital camera market two years back, but seems Pentax has been doing better and better.

Buy a Pentax and enjoy the latest new DA* lenses, and let's all help Pentax out ;)

I have a Pentax MZ 5 SLR camera. Someone told me that I can use my existing lens on a Pentax DSLR camera. Is that true? Are Pentax DSLR cameras any good?

i think all the latest pentax dslr's are Pentax K lens mount which supports K, KA, KAF and KAF2 lenses, and i'm sure a couple of my lenses date back 20-30 years, so yeah, pentax dslr's are backwards compatible.

are they any good?
well, i havent read any bad reviews of them.
and ive been quite happy with mine. its been a good performer.

any good ? I still have a Pentax K 1000 . If you can't find your hammer, you can spend half your evening nailing a few wooden boards with it and later you can still go on taking pictures with it.

Obviously the MZ 5 is another cuttle of fish, with a body basically made of plastic, but taking into account what has always been Pentax philosophy, you can be sure it is worthwhile what you paid for it.I mean the quality/price ratio in Pentax is fairly better than at some of the so-called photography giants

On lens compatibility:
Yes, if your lenses are auto-focus ones.
Yes and No, if your lenses are manual-focus ones.

On Pentax DSLRs:
Personal opinion - up to now I'm disappointed with Pentax DSLRs. The upcoming K10D is the only one I felt excited over. But then again I'm the kind who prefers my Pentax MX with a 50/1.4 lens 99.99% of the time, so what do I know...
