ot a bit. i observe that flammable gas/liquid prohibited. would bringing a lighter with lighter's fluid or a six or eight inches high can of lighter's gas/fluid be contravening the prohibition? seems so, in the later case.

I dare not swallow my saliva

You have to if you sit beside her in MRT:

Or drown in your own saliva. :bsmilie:

Which is the relevant law which talks about prohibition of such flammable liquids?

do not know. i noticed the prohibition signages in the train cars.

We people in Singapore asked for this fine to be in place on the MRT trains. Actually, I think they are lenient already. I thought it was already Fine $500 if caught eating/drinking?

The problem with people here is, they have to be constantly "caned" or fined in order to be shaped to have good behavior or responsibility.

In the first place, the no eating/drinking rule even without a fine is a bit riduculous. I don't know of any other country having this. Well, maybe a very small handful if we do some research. Even then, they probably will close one eye if someone takes out something small to munch or have a sip of water. We would have enjoyed this also, if not for jokers who treat the MRT like a picnic. I couldn't believe when I read what some commuters brought into the train to eat: nasi lemak, soupy noodles, etc! What were they thinking?

The problem with us (I'm speaking of the general, good if you are civic-minded) is, we don't have a sense of responsibility. We've been brought up with the thinking, As long as this does not beong to me, I won't care. So cleaniness on the train is not my problem. Once I alight, it's other people's problem. Silly as they are, the irrresponsible commuters don't realize they will have to use the trains on other occasions. Just as many low IQ commuters try to stand right in front of the doors before they open, not realizing that, if they don't give way to passengers inside the train, they can't get in themselves and more time will be wasted for everybody. Really dumb. Bad culture we have here.

For the same reasons, they ban chewing gums to help keep Singapore clean. They used to fine people $150 cos Singaporeans don't know how to flush toilets! Remember? Then they draw bright yellow lines inside MRT stations to tell people how to stand cos many Singaporeans don't know. And yet, many still don't know how!

I'd like MRT to perhaps implement a fine for those who stand right in the middle of the train doors before they open for inside passengers to get out. Ridiculous it may sound, but then, like I said, people here needs to be "caned" like kids otherwise they won't know how to do even simple things like these.

you beat me to it! well said. the fundamentals of 'ugly singaporeans' apply to the public in general. it's just ingrained in us (we are still a young and growing nation in terms of culture and sophistication, even with such high economic growth and infrastructural/educational development)

Well said bro. It's the bad culture and education system. People are too self centred and don't spare a thought of others.

If we can behave half as good as the Japanese, I don't think we'll even come to this stage. In Japan, speaking loudly on the phone is even considered a taboo. The key here is to be considerate and spare a thought for others when doing anything in public.

I think this is more than like 'asian' thing as compared to just Singaporeans (with exception of Japan perhaps). You should have hear the train stories my fren told me when he's working in China....it's a war zone :bsmilie:

Singaporeans are angry about something all the time, FT and PR included, we can never be civilised :dunno:

While i feel that getting fined over eating a sweet or drinking plain water is overboard, we have only ourselves to blame for today's situation, thanks to those who have over the years behave as if they are in a foodcourt or picnic grounds while taking the trains..

So who's fault?

Why are people always using the Jap as example...as if they are angels?

Agree with this. In different countries, there are different cultures. For a long while, I have given up the "pls stand on the left" going up escalators but things seem to have improved. If you are in UK or HK, these things are automatic and you don't need to remind the people to do it. In Singapore, I find that people are always testing the limits, i.e. fine seems to be the best deterrent. Although I disagree with the drinking plain water, unfortunately you do have people drinking soft drinks, eating and other things which will dirty the train. Even those who drink plain water, may leave their empty bottles behind.

It's sad, but the culture of the people in Singapore is too self-centered. Fines seem to be the only thing that works. After a while, it becomes a culture, like throwing thrash into bins.

What irks me is, after all these training over the years for us to find the bin to throw things into... WHY MRT GOT NO BIN??! ;( (even outside in the vicinity of entrance, for people to throw their drinks and food before going into MRT station).

Why not? They may not be angels, but at least they are much, much more well mannered and cultured than we do. A lot of things they do it automatically, not like us, have to use fines as a deterrent. Then after that so many people complain this complain that.

If all of us could be so well mannered in MRTs, then authorities wouldn't have to use such methods to curb eating, and I'm sure certain cases like having a sweet, having medication, drinking of water, could be allowed, or they just close one eye. It's because of people eating to such an extent like hot food, they have no choice but to shut everything down. :(

Hey bro, if you can recall, there used to be bins inside and around the MRT, especially besides the escalators. They removed all that after 9/11. Scare people putting 'ticking' things inside if you know what I mean.

I just saw two foreigners having a picnic on the back five seats of a SBS bus. One of them even removed her shoes and propped her feet up on the seats, taking up three seats in total. They were both enjoying a meal of McChicken sia. Should have taken their photo but I was too lazy.

yeah, very well behave indeed,
if we r like them, i won't let my daughters travel alone on the train :)

Jap well mannered and cultured are overrated. I have met enough of Jap who are ill-mannered. :thumbsd:

OK, here is my take for this topic

I do not mind little kids drinking milk, adults taking a sip of water, or even have a small bite on the mrt.

What i detest are people who gives a loud fart and burp after having a durian feast. That alone is worse than eating. Also, i had come across people bringing durians on train and secretly eating them! Now thats ultimate.
