Well, the shop did put up a sign telling it is a B grade, and now you are calling them unethical?

You misunderstood, it was ethics in the first place that's why the sign was placed and that is good business ethics.;)

Oh no...if I buy that parallel imported Honda car now which is not warrantied by Kah Motors, are they all B grade rejects from the Honda factory in Japan???

But they feel the same, drive the same and show no difference...how?

So don't dwell too much into this 'grey' issue with lenses. Although I'm no industry expert, I'm sure big camera-brand companies like Canon/Nikon will not allow these 'B' grade rejects to flow into the mass market which consists of many professionals earning their living from their equipment. There's too much at stake here for them to take the risk that might run the slightest risk of bringing down their reoutation and integrity to their products.

Like what one earlier CSer commented, if I bought a local warrantied set from Cathay Photo and return to US after that, it'll be considered a 'grey' set to Canon USA.

Is it that hard to understand, my friends?...:)

This is just information exchanging. Look at it. If it is authentic but parallel import, sold cheaper, it's good for consumer. But if it is B grade but repackage or branded as A grade, it's fraud. If it is a B grade product, it should be listed as one and sold at that price. No problem too. But when goods leave manufactiurer warehouse, somewhere along the supply chain when someone want to play tricks and that's when problem occur so from the consumer point of view, it's good information to know that B grade products exist.

B grade products do exists yes, I am not refuting that, in your Nike case it may be a returned item or an overstocked item (as they were the same as the currect stock), or from a closed shop, but these returned items are the minority, these however also falls under B grade, as they are already 'used' but still like new. I don't know know how long it has to be 'used' before it is sold as a B grade, this you have to ask the particular retailer.

This discussion was about whether there are B grade cameras/lenses, and there are non. Not with these high grade items at least......for other electronics I am not sure.

When you buy from some US shops though, you need to be careful as there is a 7 days return warranty (no questions asked), so they may sell these as new again.......this is a well known problem in the US.

Cathay also sells cameras/lenses that were handled by prospective buyers in their shop too, and then returned when the buyer backs out (for whatever reason), these items should be still new. But there are some buyers who insists on getting an unopened one, but then you have not been able to 'test' it :-)

take the argument somewhere else..

we are here to talk abt OP..

We need a separate forums for

"Funny arguments where only 2 people keep going at it"

I bet I'd be a frequenter of it, but in any case, stop fighting here please, this is about OP, an excellent shop. If you want to fight in some thread about a funny shop which has not done me any good at all, be my guest. But this is a good shop, and your argument about B-grade C-grade or XXX-rated or what is just drowning out all the praises for OP - which deserves more customers, more than any shop I've been to in Singapore for photographic needs thus far.

(Ok, along with the fact that I need it to survive for one year so that they can help out if my DSLR has problems while it's still under shop warranty. Just kidding.)

thumbs up for OP. found my 70-300mm lens AF switch jam and went back last week for servicing. They had indeed replaced my sigma len with a brand new piece with no question ask..that's grade A service.

I believe this is the 1-to-1 exchange policy within 7 days of purchase. If OP replace a new one, I believe the faulty one will be returned to the supplier/manufacture for their disposal.

If your perception that the faulty one will be repaired and resales as new or 2nd hand, I would suggest you keep away from that Sigma lense model. No offence.

I bought a Slingshot 200AW from them a few months ago......today i found out that the front pocket zipper is faulty...called Lynn up and she told me to bring it in to the shop....brought the faulty bag in and a thorough inspection was done and was told that they could change it for a new one but the stock wasn't it yet.....was even offered to select another type of bag for exchange....was thinking of changing to a bigger bag 300AW but the lady boss said that i have to wait for a few days.....along came another guy wearing a NIKON t-shirt offered to repair it for me.....handed to him my bag and few minutes after he handed it back to me good as new....Lynn even told me if at any time the bag is faulty again she'll exchange it for a new one......called that service rendered to the extreme limits of professionalism

Good and fast response from them..

i send a email to them abt 1 plus hr ago..

and i got the email back already....

Upzzz again.. for them...

All i can say is that foreign talents are waking up complacent singaporeans...

OP shaking up local photo businesses maybe... if you ask about nationalities, you'll find many sales staff aren't Singaporeans but Foreign Talents from the north.

Are you mentioning about focus limiter? Or AF / MF switch? If it is focus limiter, you can only switch it on/off at certain focal length (i think near 300mm). Not all focal length. It will look like it is jammed.

Anyway their service is really good.

Well, after all the positive stuff going around about Orient Photo, I decided to pay them a visit.

I must say that I was quite impressed with the service. When I asked to see/test a couple of Sigma lenses (10-20 and 30/f1.4), they obliged and let me try them out without any feeling of pressure/ obligation to buy.

In the end, I DID buy - a Sigma 10-20mm lens (S$720), a LowePro backpack, plus a couple of filters (a Kenko UV filter and a B+W polarizer). The price was a lot lower than what is indicated on the Nikon price guide (http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=151190), and perhaps just a hair off the supposed price in Hong Kong (where I had intended to buy this lens on my next trip there - which is just next week)!

Oh, and they threw in a pen (which I will probably give away - but nice touch, nevertheless!). I did not bother trying to bargain - the prices they offered were already quite good to start with.

Hope they can keep it up!

Quite surpised that the pricing of canon bodies is quite close to the "GONG JIA" (common shop price) in hongkong.

After reading so much about grey, B sets, I am wondering if it is a risk to buy cam body from OP....

Ok, i meant the local photo businesses, not really the rest. Seems like local photo businesses are usually by Singaporeans, right?

For the 10-20, bargain or not, I think they give you their best when you ask for the price. I am guilty of this, I tried bargaining but they didn't lower it any further. I still took it gladly.:)

Have fun with ur 10-20. It's a good lens. In my experience, no grade B quality, only grade B photographers. :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

I bought a len hood from them...The young chap is patient and helpful..

but I think that they are short-handed..
pretty big shop with good stuffs..

Slowly browsed and they wont mind at all...nice..

AP has plenty of FT bengs from the North. Not sure whats Alan's nationality but not surprised if he's not Singaporean either. Anyway concerning OP, its too early to tell. Shops usually start off humble and helpful. Most will change over time. Who knows how OP will be 2, 5 years down the road?
