Hi

mylau i really, sincerely think u're throwing your money in all the wrong places. seriously, if u really want to collect cameras, you should collect REAL cameras. u know, like those special edition Leica bodies and lenses  :D

These plastic digital all singing all dancing toys / gizmos u're buying now will drop in price in less than 12 months and no matter how long u hang on to them, their value will never increase and nobody will want them.

CONVERSELY, if u have a Leica, even if it is not a special edition, these things will only appreciate, after taking inflation into account.

Look, late last year Leica just discontinued the last of the fully manual mechanical M6 TTL in favour of the electronic M7, after a production run of 18 years. 18 YEARS, not months. Boy am i glad i got one of them before they expire cos all over the world pple are rushing to get the last of them before you can buy them no more from retail shops. The prices will only steadily increase as the years passed.

I think i can comfortably retire EARLY in a few years time after selling the M6 at a as yet undetermined grossly inflated price :) Or, if film is still around, hand it down to my future son / grandson. These things are built to last. The second hand M3 I got was made in 1960 - i was only born 15 years AFTER that! The 50mm lens i bought to pair with the M3 was made in 1968 - again before i was born.

Together the ancient M3 + 50mm lens took 50% (2 rolls) of the Korban 2003 shots i posted, the other 50% with the M6 + 35mm lens. Starting to get my drift?

At PMA 2003 this year, Leica revived the mechanical line (boy that was a quick revivial) with the latest Leica MP. This caused an amazing amount of stir because it's a return to the traditional production methods and tooling - it's a M6 with the extreme durability and precision of the M3. It's the most well built Leica M ever, and its priced the same as a M6 TTL.

In fact, Leica is so confident of the MP they offered a 5 year warranty worldwide, plus a guarantee of spare parts for the MP being available for the next 30 years.

Now of course film may not be around for 30 years (neither may Leica, for that matter, but think about how much a MP would fetch after 30 years when u can no longer find one :)

And the best thing is, these cameras are totally 100% real shooter cameras! you can actually use them! *gasp* they don't run out of batteries cos they don't need them! *double gasp* you can shoot and shoot and create wonderful pictures with them again and again reliably! And they increase in value while u're doing all that shooting! (worn black bodies are more collectible to collectors) *faint*

See mylau? collect objects of value, not toys. If i have the money like you, that's wat i will do. Unfortunately, I don't, so i'll just use my Leicas till they're all worn out - in like, about 50 years time?

Hmmm, sounds interesting. Do these Leica things do 8 fps?

If you get a kick from buying Nikon stuff, selling Nikon stuff, buying Canon stuff, upgrading Canon stuff, downgrading Canon stuff, upgrading... wherever is the thrill in switching to a brand that only releases items once every 20 years?

brag? wat's there to brag about? remember the point of this post is not about using them, it's about showing mylau the collection value compared to those digital stuff :D

no. but mylau or other pple seriously want to devise a strategy buying and trading these Leica things, the dollar notes in the wallet would do more than 8 fps if u flip them

uhmm.....u're right. i suppose one can still continue to buy and sell other brands in the meantime while waiting for Leica to release the next body

oops sorry guys. in between writing minutes for a meeting and posting here, i've managed to eliminate accidentally most of Jed's post  :(

the mistake came about when i hit the "edit" key instead of "Quote" when i wanted to reply. (i think they are too close to each other.....)

to paraphrase some of the points from the original post, i remember one about buying, using and selling more bodies than Leica manage to release in half a century......

That's a pretty good suggestion. BUT it'll only work provided he knows how to use or appreciate Leica! It's not for newbies...

You'll notice that I managed to hit the "quote" key just fine thank you very much. No wonder with your manual dexterity you can end up using a Leica and thinking it's good. I think you should have your eyesight checked too. :bsmilie:

At any rate here's my original post in it's entirity. And if RD edits this again, then...

<the rest of RD's post truncated to spare the world from premature global warming due to all the hot air>

Actually, like the Leica user that you are, you're missing the point. There would be no fun for Mylau to collect Leica. They take way too long to release new cameras and lenses. If you get a kick from buying Nikon stuff, selling Nikon stuff, buying Canon stuff, upgrading Canon stuff, downgrading Canon stuff, upgrading... wherever is the thrill in switching to a brand that only releases items once every 20 years? Imagine, in less than 2 years he's managed to buy, use and sell more camera bodies than Leica have released in about a century.

Let's face it, Leica's crap for collecting and showing off too. And I tell you why you will still have parts for your M6 in 30 years time RD, cause in 30 years time the M6 will still represent the pinnacle of Leica technology. Sad but true.

No offence to Leica users everywhere. That was said in jest. Except maybe Red Dawn.

Red Dawn,

Everyone has their priorities when it comes to collecting cameras, plastic or metal, electronic of mechanical.

Althought I don't represent all but I guess the reason why many of us buy and trade camera bodies, lens, parts and accessories is because we out grow them and seek someone new, something new to play with.

Yes, the Leica M is a worthy collection, yes the value might just appreciate over time but someone for some of us, we don't derive pleasure, joy or appreciation from them.

However, I'm sure your post did show some users here what the other side is like.

Here's a tip for you, try collecting Rolleis...

Streetshooter, the Leica M does not do 8 fps.

I don't know why some people love the 8fps thingy.

I trade my 1/8000, 8fps capable camera for the quieter mechanical range finders.

No, but why do 8 fps when you can do:

1. At least 15fps with a webcam
2. 24fps with a 35mm motion picture camera, e.g. Panavision
3. 25fps with a PAL video camera
4. 29.97fps with a NTSC video camera
5. 30fps with the likes of Fuji 603

:)

Upgrading or not, collecting or not, appreciating or not, at the end of the day, it's all about ONE thing, the pictures. Are you happy with your pictures? If yes, good for you, keep shooting. If no, better upgrade again or give up this hobby.

I believe both mylau and RD have their own satisfaction of keeping pace with new technology or the collection. But neither of these can give me as much joy as looking at my pictures both now and say after 50 years, if i would be still alive.

oops i hope haven't given the impression that i'm a collector of sorts. my stuff is well and truly abused..... and i do think getting a Leica M and then keeping it in the drybox most of the time is a tragic waste of perfectly good equipment which can otherwise be put to good use.

I think it's because of some German camera and some fps discussion.... :D

Now the word "10D" appears three times.
