Opinion: FE 16-35 dates

Couldn't resist it and bought it this afternoon, planning to bring it for some testing.

May I ask what sorts of filter are you guys using? I am on the Lee seven5 system but with the max adapter size at 72mm, I am quite sure I will lose some estate especially at the widest. From internet, I read that no blockage from 19mm onwards. Heading down to Funan to see if I can find some screw-in NDs or stopper.

I am tempted too... how muCH u gotten it for may I ask? Thanks

I'm using Haida 83mm square filters for ND and screw-in CPL. I need to turn the current holder 90 degrees to avoid blockage at 16-18mm.

Hi Guys,

Planning to get this lens. May I know what's the recommended filter holder to lessen the vignetting at 16mm?

Thanks in advance!!

Get a step up ring? Get Bigger thread sized filter...

Bro Errz,

Where I can purchase this 100mm slot and filters? Any brand? Whats the price range for a slot with a GND and a ND?

Thx

You can try photospheresg. The prices are in their website. I am using their Haida 83mm ND square filters and the 72mm screw-in CPL for this lens.

Thanks Bro Errz & limwl27,

Paiseh.. some noob qns.

There are 83mm & 100m slot system? Is 83mm good enough or should I go for 100mm?

What are the items I need say for GND and CPL?
If say 83mm, I will probably need a 83mm filter holder to mount on the lens & a 83mm GND?

Btw, what is an adaptor ring??

Thx

I am also new and learning :)

83mm and 100mm is the size of the square filter. You will need to use correct filter holder for it. To attach the holder (and filter) to your lens, you just need to fix the correct adapter ring, i.e. 72mm ring adapter for FE1635. If you want to use the same holder for a smaller or larger lens, you can just buy the additional adapter rings. The holder can usually hold up to 3 filters so you can stack them, i.e. 2 x ND or GND + ND.

From my experience, the 83mm ones are "basic" and designed for mirrorless since they are all cropped cameras (until A7). PhotosphereSG has ND0.9 (3 stop), ND1.8 (6 stops) and ND3.0 (10 stops) square filters. They do not have the GND nor CPL filter so you will need to buy a screw-in CPL. The 100mm ones are more "advanced" in that you can adapt the holder to have 1 filter slot so it doesn't vignette at ultra wide angle or add in the special CPL for to use with the ND/GND filters.

If you want to be safe, I think the 100mm one is better given that A7 is a full frame and 16mm is very very wide. I am using 83mm because I already bought the set previously. For 83mm, I have to turn the holder 90 degrees so it doesn't block at around 16-18mm. With that, there is still a bit of vignetting but correctable in PP. I was told there there is a new 83mm holder that will fix this and I am waiting for it :P

Hope it helps ...

The adapter ring, 82mm and 77mm were for my previous UWAs, I am currently using the 72mm for the FE 16-35:

You can try Photosphere as they carry a wide range of filter accessories:

The set I am using was acquired few years ago from Orient Photo at Sim Lim Square. The beauty of the slot in system is, even if you change lenses, there is no need to overhaul the entire filter system. You only need to get the appropriate adapter ring according to the filter diameter and you are good to go. This set of mine had seen 2 UWAs and currently is on the 3rd one which is the FE 16-35. I recommend you get the 100mm instead of the 83mm size to avoid vignetting problem especially when shooting at 16mm.

For a start, since you are using the A7 series, it means you have a wide latitude of dynamic range to play with. For me, I rely 100% on ND filters only as the DR of the A7R is so wide that I have little to no problem when recovering details during post processing. If the DR of the scene is too wide to cover in a single frame, then I will just exposure blend a couple of frames to reign in the DR.

The ND filters I have are the Haida 3 and 10 stops plus the Lee Big Stopper. Sometimes I do wish I have a 6 stops ND to drag the shutter speed a little more but since the performance of the lens and camera is good, I normally will just stop down and use the aperture to control the shutter speed. I use the Haidas a lot as I prefer the neutral to slightly warm-ish white balance over the cooler Lee Big Stopper. I cannot speak for the CPL as I never use one before.

Maybe you can think about what and how you shoot, then you will have a clearer picture on what to buy. I used to have the HiTech GND kit set which consist of 1, 2 and 3 stops soft grads. The 2 and 3 stops grads saw the most usage but I stopped using them due to the purple colour cast which resulted when stacking filters.

Here is a typical setup of my then 5DMK3 + 16-35L II with 2x GNDs stacked in the filter holder:

Wow!! Thank you guys bro Errz, Tecnica & limwl27 for your valuable inputs.

I felt I have attended a short lesson on filter systems.

Will go back and think about what I want to shoot.

Thanks so much!!

No worries, hope that you found the info to be useful.

If you are going to use screw-in round filters, UV inclusive, get the slim or ultra-slim ones whenever possible.

If you want to go into 100mm filters, go back a few posts, there are a few write-ups for you to read.

For CPL, I leave it to others to advise you as I am not familiar with it.
