I have no qualms dealing with TCW, just caveat emptor as usual. Always check things like receipts and such, their stuff is perfectly fine.

There was once where they wrote the name of the lens wrongly on the receipt(of course rendering the shop warranty void), but they hastily apologised and issued me a new receipt when I pointed it out.

So far have bought 2 lenses and a flash from them, no problems. I like the shop actually. The only thing that I dislike is the turnaround time for repair. I had a lens in there for 4 months. Ugh.

after reading this thread it gives me an impression that the mentioned shop seems to have some "bad repu".... Care share some of those things (not including the thread starter bad ex..)... ;)

wow!~! u've been had.
amazingly dishonest, the way they pulled a fast one over u with the diffuser dome thing.:thumbsd:

through ur sad experience, i wouldn't know to call it sad, or not, since u seemed ecstastic abt ur purchases,i know once again that this shop is one to avoid at all costs.:thumbsd:

cheers,
cheese
the 'enlightened' one on which shop to siam.

my first ever camera purchased was from TCW. It was a EOS 30. The price they quoted was very attractive but at no point in time did they mention it was a grey set. Of course, one can say I should have done my homework before buying but by not coming clean with the warranty of the camera, they do not come across as very honest with their dealings.

The same happened to me when I bought my flash there.Although price was okay, once one finds out it leaves a bitter taste.I had done my "homework" pricewise, but I never knew/heard about greyset.
Later when I found out, I was assured by some CS members, that they give shop warranty, since they never mentioned it, I am not to sure.
Btw, the same time they also tried to pull a fast one with a remote for the D70.They wanted to sell it for 30.-S$(made in China copy) I told the guy ,that I know the price, so he sold it to me for 15.-S$
That was last time I went to TCW.

I will not consider Alan Photo a good shop! Service level is rock bottom! Prices are just so so....served by sales peoson who do not have in depth knowledge of their products!

actually its more like unfair biasness against TCW.
to put it simple some people like Coke some like Pepsi, 7up v.s. Sprite
some like Mee Pok 'tah, mai hiam' some like Mee Siam 'mai hum' :bsmilie: :bsmilie:
to each his own...

Well all i can say about TCW is dat they are friendly n have a good range of "USED" lens 4 sale.... Cheers

in fairness with TCW, i bought few stuff from them, i have no problem so far, of course am aware that my nikon stuff are not locally warranthy. The other day I supposed to buy D200, but Nic rather advised me to get from other shop instead if am after for warranthy. But again, if the items will be sent off outside Singapore, it doesn't serve the purposed of having a local warranthy right?

And he is very nice guy!

cheers!

I bought my first SLR from Alan Photo, the guy there tried hard to sell me a DSLR..
Service was ok, tho' could be much better i reckon..

Nowadays I get my gear from John 3:16 at Funan..
Service is so far the best I know, tho' prices may not be the lowest around..

(Yes, Sam even remembers the gear that you bought from him from a while back..)

Just for clarification, did TCW try to sell you an EXTRA diffuser (ie there was one already in the package but you didn't check), or there wasn't any in the package to begin with and they tried to sell you one?

That will make a large difference to whether they just tried to sell extra things you don't need (nothing really illegal about that), or they tried to sell you something which should have already been in the package to begin with.

Do clarify as I think some of the folks here may have misunderstood one way or the other.

TS, the diffuser in question, like vince123123 wrote, pls clarify, i am getting confuse.

mordern flash comes with a build in diffuser. how does the one they tried selling you looks like?

i thought sb800 has a diffuser which comes with the set

at least both my sb800 has it...

care to describe the diffuser abit?

if possible, take a photo of your diffuser and post it here...

i will be able to identify if it should come with sb800 as a standard parkage

[bet many of us here can identify it easily]

btw, you know why you have to bring the sb800 back to TCW if there are any problems?

cos Singapore Nikon Service Centre will not entertain you... your flash is known as a "grey set"

[nothing wrong with TCW or "Grey Set"... besides the fact that TCW pulled the "diffuser" stunt on you... "and Grey set" basically means parallel imported products hence Singapore NSC will not bother looking at them..... ]

other than the above mentioned reasons, really nothing else wrong with TCW and Grey Set...

so post a pic of your diffuser for us and meanwhile enjoy what you have:)

I feel that many have missed the point. It is not just the diffusser. It is also the last statement by the lady to the TS.

Hi All,
While I came out the Mighty Lady(guess she is the Owner) called me again and said.."in case of any problem, Bring the flash to me ..i'll get it rectified Faster...Thank you so very muchh"

Of course it can mean if you have any problem with the flash and when you come to the shop give it to me(ie me as the boss) or it can also meant give it to me(my shop) instead of the agent as I can get it repair faster. Which the TS has taken the later as the context of the communication as he does not know about the warranty status.

Why in the first place has she not told the TS that it is a grey set? Afterall the TS is not a regular and knowing that the TS do not even know there is a diffuser, it is obvious that the TS is quite a newbie in the equipment as such she should have advise the TS about the diffuser as well as the warranty status. If she has done so, I would agree that it is great service if not then they are trying to hid something from the TS. Hence I feel that they do not deserved such praises from the TS.

I have nothing against TCW but just sharing my sentiment in all fairness. Afterall the TS would have been in the dark and would realised his set is not warranted by the agent and he has purchase additional diffuser for not nothing when he comes posting here.

I hope all members especially newbies here do ask the shops and understand what exactly they are buying and the conditions attached especially when the price is so low and when you are a not even a regular at the shop but just a walk-in customer.

Just an illustrations, when I travel as a tourist overseas, I always become very wary when the shop keeper would tell me that it is the "special for you, best price for your only". Why for me only when I do not even know the him and just seen him for the first time and what is so special about me that he has to give me the special for me only best price?

Yap, thats the regular statement make by almost all salesman regardless where, and funny that it always works.

Yes you are absolutely correct, there are two issues here, the diffuser and the fact that the set was gray. I did thought that the TS already realised the implications of having bought a gray set from the earlier posts so that was settled - however, the issue on the diffuser seemed unsettled as some seemed to be of the impression that the diffuser was sold to him even though it was an included item, whereas I read the TS's posts as TCW tried to sell him an extra diffuser - hence the need for clarification.

as I was not aware that a diffuser comes along with SB800.Shame on me for not looking at the diffuser when they opened up.I concentrated only on the flash. And fortunately, they agreed to take back the diffuser.

In Post #14, the TS has indicated that he did not know the set came with the diffuser.

Anyway, as I have commented the idea here is not to say that TCW has bad service but it is a matter of giving credit to where it is due. And in my opinion, certainly not TCW in this case. :)

Yeap, I read post #14 to mean that he ended up with two diffusers instead of one :)
