OMG! Look at the EM-1 aka the now official E-M1 Thread

is it ugly?

Bodies wise, no. Even if they do, few would have the incentive to invest too much tech to match the progress made by the big 2.

Color and saturation is something you could do easily in post with Lightroom. In fact, the weakness in M43 is that even at low ISO, the shadow noise is quite noticeable, which is less of a problem in APS-C. And APS-C wise, Fuji does a pretty good job with colors as well.

Like I say, each person can have his or her own preferences. And I would prefer my shots to come up the way I like rather than needing to go to photoshop and do the tweeting to get the effect. It is faster and easier that way. Plus I don't print my shots to door size or poster size, so I find noise control pretty alright at my usage... and my OMD actually is pretty close to my 7D, so no complains there too. Of course D7100 or latest APS-C sensored camera might fare better... but latest m4/3 like the GX7 and the EM1 is going to be better than OMD too, so it is an incremental upgrade.

As to Fuji sensor... I have seen the photo... I know it is quite good... but somehow I still like Olympus' colour (call me a fanboy if you want) but I find Olympus color the best... but like I mentioned before, you can like any other camera, each had his/her own preferences.

Also I think body wise, Olympus is priced pretty alright. The lens (if it really is around 900 to 1k) would be just nice too.

I would not be so fast as to dismiss a camera brand as by saying that the brand's camera is not priced right, if it is your own opinion, then it is alright because everyone is entitled to his/her opinion and you might find that camera a waste of money... but if I have the monies, I will jump right into it, because I find the pricing very good indeed ;)

Dslr and their lenses seems value-add and seems price reasonable. But i prefer to pay something i will use more often which is m43. Olympus is not stupid. The way m43 are launching new model reflect the market shift comparing the the old 4/3 format.

I uses a 6d n 24-70 f2.8 for assignments. The bokeh effect is easy to made with such dslr. But asked me to bring out for outing, street shoot or holidays? I prefer my omd. Its not about which sensor is bigger or dynamic range is better. Its about which cam is fun and u love to shoot with.

This EM1 is the E-X series replacement. Who buy an E-X series in the first place? It is rightly logical for those who have E-X now or those who have been using with suffering on the EM5 to replace it with EM1.

For EM5 users, wait for next year's revision of the EM5 if you are not looking to buy some FT lenses to play.

There will be some users who will definitely pay a premium for that features to play with, these are loaded people.

What I am not sure is would PDAF comes to EM5 series or not (which is unlikely). And if it is unlikely, then would Olympus create lenses for mFT that can have PDAF. If the answer is yes, then I will be one of those suckers that would pay the premium to buy the EM1 for PDAF operation.

I would believe that, if not for the fact that the damn things will drop 25% in price within a few months. It wouldn't be the first time Olympus messed up the pricing. See: EP-5

Yes, but that's only if you can afford it. The reality is Olympus is competing and not complementing DSLRs. Price becomes thus an issue. It is no wonder why mirrorless isn't taking up well in the West.

Olympus for some reason or another tries to compete like Leica, but look what happened to Leica in the 80s.

You DO. The 17-55/2.8. If you want cheap, go with Sigma. The Sigma 18-35/1.8 looks like a pretty sweet lens.

Honestly, Olympus still does not get that they are pricing their cameras at prices people will not pay. They will simply go the same way their FT system went, and then the system dies a silent slow death, and then they quietly abandon the mount, for the 3rd damn time.

canon ef-s 17-55mm is not cheap also and weights a ton. i've used apsc system and hate hanging something so heavy on my neck. i am not earning money via photography so a light system is more appropriate for me.

The thing here is... for those people who think EM1 is too expensive, and m4/3 is not the camera for them, then by all means get other cameras, get a DSLR, get a medium format, whatever. There are others who find m4/3 great... good pricing, good IQ, good size and weigh.

I own a 7D (with battery grip) and a load of EF and EF-S lenses and an OMD with three or four lenses. I love my 7D, great camera... but ever since I bought the OMD, I find my 7D sitting more and more in my dry cabinet... why? Because OMD fitted most of my uses, sure I do miss some of my DSLR's handling and capability which is why I still choose not to sell off my 7D.

I think if EM1 had everything of the DSLR and even the handling, then... great! I didn't need to maintain two systems.

And I have said before, I find the pricing pretty competitive, and for those who cry over the smaller sensor... well... let me tell you something, I took a photo using my OMD and a photo using my 7D, everything the same, without blowing it up, and looking at it from my computer screen... they are exactly the same. And to bokeh, well... not everyone is crazy over it.

As to Olympus color, well... of course one can tweak a photo using photoshop to achieve that color, but it was also the same when one can also use photoshop to remove or create bokeh too. So... I really don't find any issue here as claimed by others.

It is no wonder why mirrorless isn't taking up well in the West.

And finally... NEX is selling extremely well in the west (taking over Nikon in UK) and for those who still don't know... NEX is a mirrorless camera system ;) And the west is not the only market out there... in Asia, Olympus and Panasonic are doing extremely well... when I went to Japan a couple of months ago... all I see is Panasonic, Olympus and Sony... and all of them are mirrorless systems.

If money is a issue, I will just get a Panasonic G3 at less than US$200. The output is almost on par with the latest m43...One advantage of system is about the lenses and other bodies. More and more companies are joining m43 force and it's a good news for me at least.

Yeah, Mirrorless is doing well in Asia, but horribly in the West where the shipments actually fell faster than DSLR sales. Olympus, Nikon and other companies reports a fall in sales. Panasonic doesn't want to bring an all-black GX7 to the US, and the Canon EOS-M seems to have been completely withdrawn for the US.

I do not want to bring in the number, but since you wanted to go there... lets go there ;)

In UK and US, best selling cameras... yes, you are looking at the Canikon (in term of DSLR)... and only few mirrorless cameras are being a hit in that two 'western' country. Sooo... if that sales value is any indication to anything... then all other brands of cameras (be it mirrorless or DSLR) should be pissing **** now. Why? Even their DSLR are not selling in that two countries! So... they should really look into their pricing strategies too, not just Olympus, but everyone out there.

However, lucky for those interchangeable lens camera manufacturers... Europe and US are not the only markets out there (as mentioned before), there are other markets segments too :)

There are many reasons why those cameras are not selling well in Europe and US... although I do admit that we cannot dismiss price as one of the factors, but price is not the only factors :)

Is it correct to say that ft lenses will now have much better af on em1 compared to em5 for example?

Yes! EM1 apparently has pdaf on sensor. So 4/3 glass supposed to focus as fast as E-X cams!

really interested to see the new 12-40mm F2.8 compared to 12-60mm SWD !
if AF is now not an issue... would the 12-60mm be a better choice covering a longer range ?

Oh... one thing that came to my mind... if EM1 is going to be fully compatible with the FT lenses and yet retain the size of the EM5 (except for the grip)... ain't the small size of it make it a little awkward when fitted with big FT lenses like the 300mm?

Definitely lar.

Look at E1 vs E-M1
E1 was built as a DLSR alternative in mind ... E-M1 is neither here nor there.

I love the E1 ergonomics. Looks like the E-M1 has some of the E1 ergonomics with the slightly slanted shutter button. The deep grip I am sure will make many happy. I'm neutral about that. It does not look that great to me actually...so I will reserve judgement till I see the real thing. I think its going to be slightly bigger than the EM5. Very strange how they are numbering this as EM1 after the EM5. Quite confusing.

What I hope for was a swivel screen instead of a tilt screen ;)

Also wonder how good will the viewfinder be and will they finally include the damned focus peaking ability (hoping for an upgrade from the EP5's focus peaking, which I have read quite a number of stories on).

I am presuming that both the E-M1 and the new 12-40 are weather sealed?

Swivel screen will be nice. Can take selfies! :-)
Tilt screen usually not so nice for selfies. I have the EPL5 and although it tilts 180, it is not a one motion tilt. The gf6 tilt screen tho is better for selfies. It even has a selfie mode. But whatever, swivel is nicer.
