OMG! Look at the EM-1 aka the now official E-M1 Thread

is it ugly?

Think a bigger body will fit my bigger hands better. Found the em5 slightly too small until the battery grip was added.

Agreed with you. It had reach a point where holding onto the EM5 became abit painful for my fingers. However with my cheap OEM grip added, I find it a non-issues. The EM5 sensor is excellent, easily on par with my old EOS 7D, don't know why people still keep complaining about the MFT sensor :dunno:

Anyway, I believe the EM1 with a deeper grip and overall slightly larger built would be a great companion to carry around :)

just read the DPR first impressions over at http://www.dpreview.com/previews/olympus-om-d-e-m1

dont know if im a bit blind but the EM5 images seem a little sharper??

First thing I went to check was the size, DPReview used a woman's hand to hold the camera, and even then it still looks a little small, I can't imagine someone my size holding it without a grip. And yes, the pictures do look a wee bit sharper compared to the EM5

Olympus fudging with the sharpening filter again? Or the lack of AA filter?

Not really sure, I can't be bothered t keep up with specs anymore, when I need a new camera then I'll research hahaha, but it does a tack bit sharper

Saw an youtube video on this... yep the new EM1 doesn't have the AA filter. And uses software to reduce moire pattern.

The only trouble is the lack of an AA filter difference only really matters most at low ISO and becomes most apparent at pixel peeping level. Standard JPEGs don't really give a significant difference.

On the other hand, Olympus (and Panasonic) is known to fudge with the sharpen filters so...

This is one body which I must feel and molest physically to appreciate before concluding whether its a must buy or out of my league :/

Technical specifications wise , superb. Go look at the ISO1600 and above photos at Robin Wong's page.

My Only worry actually is will it be too heavy and big for my weak and pampered self haha.

For the EM5 and EP5 , nope I had enough faith to just buy the set from just reviews from peers and online and no regrets at all.

read contradicting report saying that the em1 does correction to pana lens as well (source from blunty)... anyone know anything about this?

Having gone through the previews and reviews... I think I like this camera... BUT I'll stay with my E-5 until it is not working anymore... or unless someone wants to buy my E-5!

Money is one reason, the other reason is (for me), size does not matter. I've been comfortable with the E-5, and I already own the E-M5 for whenever I want to travel light. Guess I'll wait for the EM7... :P

funny to be hearing that for m43 user... if size does not matter... shouldn't u be going for proper DSLRs..? :dunno:

regards,
wacky

Is the E-5 not a proper DSLR?

Sounds fishy but would be great!

Bro ... Weight is not defining factor already for IQ le la , RX1R full frame but not heavy :)

I think I really meant lower profits for the higher spec lenses. Sorry. But it seems they are charging more for the average lenses. I seem to recall and note that the older FT high end zooms used to cost as much as their FF equivalents from other companies. But here we are, and Olympus seems to be asking for lower prices. Olympus tends to overspec their higher end lenses to get out better image quality (the 75/1.8 has actually a larger effective field of view hence a larger image circle). While that is good, it means the costs go up accordingly.

I suppose on the 35-100mm f/2.0, they had to work very hard to make it f/2.0, hence the size and weight. Since it's a 77mm filter size, as is the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8, it probably cost Olympus a bit more without more lenses being sold to offset development costs. I don't see the same thing happening with micro Four-Thirds. I think they're just over-charging, especially since most of them aren't weather-sealed.

odd cos what i read said the opposite. haha i guess we can agree to disagree in this case, esp since i got it at a bargain price when i bought my EM5 earlier this year

i like the inference of the filter size you compared to the optic equivalent...that is indeed food for though.

alas its not always the equipment but the person behind it.

like you, ill wait for the next one.

out of curiosity thought, what gear are you using?

I'm guessing that you were replying to me, but didn't quote me. I hope so or this will look foolish.

My gear? Olympus E-5, E-1 with ZD 14-54mm f/2.8-3.5, 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5, 50mm f/2.0 macro, 35-100mm f/2.0, 14-35mm f/2.0, Leica/Panasonic 25mm f/1.4 plus Panasonic DMC-GH3 with Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8, 45-200mm f/4.0-5.6 and Olympus MMF-3.

The 50-200mm is generally used for outdoor sports and the 35-100mm for indoor sports with the Panasonic equipment being used for extra difficult lighting. I used the E-1 for everything until late 2011. Didn't extensively use auto focus until the GH3, since it's a pain to use manual focus with it.

the E-M1 is already slightly heavier... plus, the 12-40/2.8 is also heavier tipping the scales over the weight of the 12-35 or 12-50... and do expect the new lenses under the PRO cat to be heavier too... if intending to use the FT lenses, they are even heavier...

overall, going over to E-M1 is definitely heavier than the current E-M5 and NEX... and approaching the weight of DSLRs... but if the IQ is much better, it is a trade off... of course, excl. the RXs...

Maybe because Sony is the largest shareholder of Olympus? ;)

I was at a Sony showroom recently and the sales guy told me that Sony is the largest sensor manufacturer, and that even Olympus cameras are using sensors made my Sony. Is this true ?
