Official Sony A7 or A7r discussion thread (Season II)

How ? Can change or not ? =(

just do it la if you guys feel more comfortable with a metal mount.... it is a completely reversible mod.... keep the original parts and put them back if you need servicing at sony.

they might deliberately make it plastic due to the threshold level of the mount.. using a material that is too strong at that part might just put too much stress on the area of the body around the mounting...to me if it ain't faulty don't fix it.... just my 2 cents...

I sent in my A7r during last Friday, to fix the light leak issue and also inquire if it is possible for Sony to change the hybrid mount to the A7s' metal mount.

Here is an update to share.

-Sony's stand is a firm NO
-I asked if it is due to Sony's unwillingness to change it or it is technically impossible, technician said that the parts for A7r and A7s are not the same.
-Technician said that he can provide me with the part number then I can order the parts and change the lens mount myself
-I blur, because he said that the parts are not the same for both models but I can order the parts and change it myself??? :dunno:
-Technician stressed that, any modification to the lens mount, will void the camera's warranty(Fotodiox Tough E-Mount users please take note)
-I asked the technician why Sony cannot change it for me since the parts can be ordered?
-Technician said that if I change the lens mount myself, and I quote him "it will be my problem".
-The A7s metal mount will cost between $40 to $50
-I questioned the technician again and he asked me to disregard his comments on ordering the A7s lens mount :dunno:

How sure are we to say that light leakage was the cause of the plastic part? Was there an acknowledgment on this issue?

As per every equipment, any modification can have side effects. Just a matter of how much risk we want to accept.

Plastic might have less wear and tear on lens mount as every cnc have some amount of tolerance. Might have good reasons to use plastic at the first place. It all boils down to designer original intention.

However, fotodiox new product is 3rd party...Hence there might some amount of risk. I might go for the a7s stock metal parts instead.

A7s probably share the same body as a7r magnesium built? correct me if I'm wrong. If So, body is stronger to withstand lens weight?

i never say the plastic mount contributes to the light leak issue.

they are 2 separate matters.

Anybody know what's the current price for new 24-70?

Planning to get the Nissin i40 flash this week. Looks like its around $250-280. Based on reviews, so far looks like a good alternative to native Sony speedlites which are much more expensive. What do you guys think? Planning to use it for general use, taking photos for family events together with my A7. And planning to try out flash photography for family portraits.

I'm waiting to get it too.
Currently the flash out of stock

At night safari with A7R n 24-70mm f4 lens. Use A mode, iso auto up to 12800, still can get a focus lock on even with infra red. Shutter speed cmi, till mostly blur photos. Might rent a A7S to try again. Too bad no stabilizer else use my 135mm f1.8 on it, heh heh!

why do you want to rent a A7S to try again?..
to increase the ISO to get a faster shutter speed?..

i was at the River Safari halloween event (SafariBoo) for kids last night.. i put my A7S to M mode with various apertures and shutter of 1/60s..
AF very good even in dim lighting w/o the AF illuminator..

with 1/60s i was able to capture my daughter w/o motion blur..
however at F4 pictures were understandably dark/under exposed..
i was using the 55mm F1.8 lens.. most of the time i set it at F4 as i was contemplating getting the 24-70mm F4 lens so i wanted to see what kinda pictures i could get out of the A7S at F4..

from my experience with them the last time i inquired, the technicians are not at the front desk at 313 (if you're referring to the Sony Care area). they are located in another facility elsewhere.

the people who are there are just like receptionists; receive the product, check it in and check the warranty status and ensure that it's sent in to the technicians.

unless you spoke to them over the phone.

it was over the phone.

it was over the phone.

thanks for clarifying.

and yes, if they assist to change the mount for you, and it doesn't work out they can be taken to task for that. it may have been a customer request, but who knows, others might not be as kind as you and actually blame them and cause trouble for the service staff.

that's how it is in the service industry
