Official Sony A7 or A7r discussion thread (Season II)

??? lol

anyway I'm curious about the sigma's performance with a7r too. would be nice to get some feedback regarding the lens.

posted a picture. was using it on a recent trip. i am more of a tech guy than a shooter but trying to improve a photo a time =) anyway the lens seems a bit big size wise with the adaptor compared to FE55 (duh!) but feels solid though and not too heavy. shooting wise much better to use than my vg 15mm, corners not as affected, as you can see from the pic, suffer from some flare problems in bright sunlight, corners a bit off, a bit of vignetting at the sides not sure if that is the correct term, but for the price, quite bang for buck for an affordable UWA.

Hi,
This is my first post here and would like to ask your help / opinions. I just purchased a sony a7r from click! (funan) and also the a mount adapter and the zeiss 55mm. I have 3 sigma lenses: 12-24, 24-70 and 70-200 (this is actually tamron). Somehow, i'm not particularly happy with the a7r and seriously thinking of returning it back and purchasing an a99.
I'm seeing focus issues even with the 55mm, so i don't think it would be the adapters issue and generally i more or less have a feeling that this is a very expensive toy, not a professional stuff. The light metering is way out, the white balance is okayish and the focus is just totally not there. Focus tracking is useless as it track, though when you view the image in 100% you can see that its quite far from sharp and to be honest the only feature what works fine is the manual focusing.
Is it only me? Did i get a faulty copy? What is Your opinion? I guess after spending 5k on this package it not too much to ask for basic functionalities to work right?

Didn't you test it when buying it at the shop? From what you described, you can't miss any of the issues stated, and I am puzzled how you still end up taking out your $5K?

You can try posting in Sony thread instead to get some attention and responses. Perhaps a few sample shots may help.

It's just some out of focus issue. Bring it to Sony centre for rectification

thanks donut88, will give that a try.

Hi ,

The camera has a lot of room for improvement but with the issues u mentioned , it's very clear it was a lemon. Try going back to Sony or the Shop to ask for an exchange if not send it in.

There's a very very active Sony A7/R thread here, so feel free to post there and I'm sure the bros / sis(Kei , I remember u ok! ) will help u too.
posts merged into existing A7R discussion thread.

Thanks Uncle Catchlights!

@Richard what shooting mode and focus settings did u use on the A7R (AF Area)

Also, the A7R is not an AF performance machine like a high-end DSLR/DSLT.

hi there.

i think if you wanted good AF tracking, you essentially bought the wrong camera. tracking with the 55 FE and A7r wont be good since it is CDAF only. if you need better tracking, try the A7 with PDAF?

next wld be your 3 3rd party lenses. are they A mount and you are using the LAEA4? or are they EF mount and you are using the metabones?

perhaps the A99 is a better choice for you really if sports and fast action is what you are after. The A7R is more of a landscape camera that requires you to work through its quirks slowly.

the way to look at the a7r is how you would look at a Medium format camera.the selling point is iq and dr..same as medium format. it was not made to replace a professional dslr. if you're hoping for it to replace an a99..then you're lookibg at it wrongly. it's slow and requires patience..so does a medium format. if you tell yourself that you'll love the a7r..if you're hoping it will af fast..track well..then this is not the camera for you..you won't pay 50k for a hassalblad and expect it to track well...

Dont think 35 1.4 will launch so soon. I hope UWA would be 10-24/F4 this one should be very big haha

Definitely will upgrade my 35mm 2.8 to 1.4 if the rumor is true. I think a lot of people hope they will make 24-70 2.8 and must be very light..

no..I want the 2470 f1.8 oss and smaller than the current one haha...I also want a 35 f1.2 the same size as the 2.8...

all jokes aside...the reason I sold the 35f28 is because I already have th e 2470f4 and the extra stop without oss of the 35 doesn't make sense to keep anymore

Bro Roy posted some nice pix from 24-70 I guess paired with lens correction either in body or Post and using smaller aperture it's sharp. Just that the lens is very pricey :-)

Hehe, i won't get into that debate again.
The IQ is definately good...you won't be able tell most times.
The issue with the lens other than the price is the distortion at 24mm and the corner softness at f4.

If you shoot jpg, the in camera correction takes care of the distortion but the softness is always going to be there.
If you shoot RAW, you'll need to apply the correction in Adobe, and fix the distortion but not the softness..

So if you're like me..rarely shooting at 24mm and rarely shooting at f4..you won't be disappointed with the lens..I personally have no issues with the lens..it fits whatever i use it for but if i really want true center sharpness and bokeh, i'll use the FE55...but most times..the versatility of the 2470 is good enough..Having said that..i'm pretty sure the kit 2870 will be equally as good if you shoot at f8-f11

Yea, because i sold the 35F28...
But i actually only ever used the FE55 for about 3 shots in the studio before falling back to the FE2470 and the 55 never went back on after..it's still in the dry box until today hehe..

thanks guys. another newbie question. so a7 with la-ea4 can mount canon/nikon lens? does it still have auto focus?

Metabones for Canon
LA-EA4 for Sony A-mount lens
Nikon ... have to use adapter but no AF supported.

Im still new here so might be wrong.
