OFFICIAL Nikon announcement on August 19th 2010: SLR !!

I've noticed that with the new lens coming out, there are a lot of F4 lens. I'm a novice and so, keep wondering why F4. Why not F3, F2, F5???? As f2.8 is way more fast, why new new and expensive lens won't stick to F2.8 and just stop at F4????

A f2.8 zoom lens aside from being expensive will be damn too heavy also.

If all new zoom lens will stop at f/2.8 and VR :

24-120 f/4 VR --> 24-120 f/2.8 VR (would be more expensive than current 24-70 f/2.8)

16-35 f/4 VR --> 16-35 f/2.8 VR (would be more expensive than current 17-35 f/2.8)

It would be a sweat dream :sweat:

After
24-70 f/2.8 --> 24-120 f/4 VR
17-35 f/2.8 --> 16-35 f/4 VR

The future lens should be:
70-200 f/2.8 ~ 70-200 f/4 VR
14-24 f/2.8 ~ 12-24 f/4 (FX lens)
:devil:

That will probably cut the weight by as much as 2Kgs.

Yup...that's my take too... why Nikon went for f/4s.... Smaller lens body and optics - lighter... and more affordable... Do you mean 200grams, not 2 kg right? Or you meant lenses in a group?

But I hope they don't neglect f/2.8 altogether...

actually... a 200/2.8 would be nice... and keep it afforable by not having vr. :heart:

I think I will not purchase it even if I can afford it due (more than 4x zoom range) that will affect image quality especially when it's near to the edge.:think:

I think the point of that lens is to trade quality for convenience. Sometimes you don't have the time to change lenses and a lens with a higher range of focal lengths will ensure you don't miss the shot. Also, I think people are underestimating the quality of zooms nowadays, they're not that bad really, if you don't look at every image at 100%

totally esp travelling
why compromise convenience for quality unless u shooting for money
for me is enjoy the trip ,just shoot shoot shoot
bring 3-4 lens last time , but in the end onli use 1 wide angle std zoom

Yeah that is why 18-200 is so popular, and I expect 28-300 to be also. If such zooms were really that useless, then why is there a 28-300 L lens from Canon. There are people who use a Canon 24-105 f4L (similar range to Nikon's 24-120) for their jobs, and I don't see them out of business.

you haven't use borderlinx before, rite? they have a very nice online price calculator to show you the total costs incurred before you commit to buy - including FX, GST, shipping charges/kg etc... takes the guesswork out of the costing. :)

the only thing 'bad' abt it for me is that i am a cheapo and opt for the standard shipping which can take up to 1 mth (sometimes). ;p

That's interesting to know! Shall check it out. Thanks for that.

I also agree.
Went travelling all over China.
Used a UWA and a 18-200. The latter being always on body.
Reason, eye want to see. Lens also want to see.
SO, convenience rules.
Different matter if travel and stay put in a place for some time.
Then, a prime will be the best; if have much time to compose and wait for light to change.
Fast food, fast car, fast forward, fast gratification, fast convenience.
Life wasn't like in the 70s. 1970s lah. Not 1870s.
That's why I guess lenses like 18-200 are being churned out from one VR to another.

Previously I traveled with my friends to China too.

All of them carried 17-35f/2.8 + 24-70 f/2.8 + 70-200 f/2.8 + FX body.
But I used only 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 VR + DX body.

I had advantage over them in daylight, especially when we were climbing the hill for sunrise.
:devil:

But I admit that they won over me when shooting indoor performance or night.
That's why I brought 50mm f/1.4 to cover my weakness ;)
