is there a way to zoom in / zoom out during video mode? other than manually adjust lens ring? is there a button to do the zooming?
You will need to use the zoom ring to zoom in or out. Unless I am mistaken, I have yet to see a dSLR with lens zoom +/- like those you see on point and shoot cameras.
hi guys,
im a newbie to dslr and have been researching about d3100..keen in purchasing it soon...for those who bought it recently able to share how much u bought it for ,where you bought it ,and what freebies included >

thanks
You can try some of my favourites price checking outlets, Funan is a relatively good place with a good spread of shops. I usually avoid SLS or Far East ... cause of bad experiences with dishonest or super pushy sales staff.
Price range of the D3100 ranges from SG$799ish to 899ish depending on Freebies and add ons.
Based on my search, so far Alan Photo is offering the cheapest at SG$799 but only with a 8GB mem card.
you can also try SLR revolution, Cathay Photos, TK Photos, etc.
Most of the time you can negotiate for freebies if you know the person or you can sell a freezer to an eskimo xD.
IMHO the freebies to get (although not a must) are :-
1. Memory Card - Class 6 at least 16GB if you take RAW+JPEG, else JPEG(fine) 8GB is more than enough. CLASS 6 advisable for 1080P 24fps HD movie recording
2. Tripod - For long end of zoom where shaking is obvious OR long exposures to avoid blur. Can be used for various other reasons as well.
3. Cleaning Kit - self explanatory
4. Bag - best thing to organize and protect your stuff.
5. Silica packs - For keeping your equipment moist free and free from fungus
6. UV filter - good for protecting your lens front, and also UV dispersement when photographing
7. Lens hood - to prevent extraneous light from refracting into the lens, ok this is arguably the most shitty of all, if you get a flower hood it sux ... cause the front of the lens rotates when AFing ... so go for the uglier round hood, but check to ensure it is compatible with the 18mm wide end of the kit lens(some hoods will cause vignetting)
Other package considerations to bargain for at cheaper price (or if free WHY NOT??!!):-
1. Dry Box - unless you intend to keep your camera in the bag with the silica pack forever, this is the best thing to protect your equipment.
2. Lenses - depending on your own research and needs, e.g. fixed focal prime lens 35mm/50mm/etc, Landscape lens ultra wide angle 10-20mm/12-24mm/etc, telephoto zoom for the voyeur in you 55-200mm/55-300mm/70-300mm/etc, or if you like all in one lens 18-135mm/18-200mm/18-270mm/etc.
In my honest opinion, try out the D3100 before you really decide, for me the deciding factor was its REALLY compact and solid form, as compared to the Canon 550D/600D Rebel series. Of course I got mine overseas (Japan model) at a much cheaper price (the canon was around the same price over here too only 40 bucks diff)
Hope this helps
Cheers
