Official D3100 User Thread

Just got back my camera, seems it was some error code, something like software problem? The nikon service centre were polite and helpful, +1 for service.

Anyway, here's my favourite pic I took in Dubai, pic looks so fake like a poster ad. It's a picture of The Address Hotel near Dubai Mall.

Hi, I am a noob to DSLR photography so thank goodness I discovered this forum. I have my eyes set on the D3100 cos of the size and the price but I am lost with regards to the lens. I will be travelling to Europe next month and hope to come back with lots of nice pics. I have been going through different websites and I notice that the photos that comes out nice and sharp are not taken with the 18-55mm kit lens. In Europe, the pictures that I would be taking are landscapes, street scenes and if possible, I would like to bring along just one lens, partly due to weight constraints. In this thread, I have read that it is possible to buy the D3100 with the 18-105mm lens. Would that suffice ? Would really appreciate help on this cos I am really ignorant on such matters. Thanks in advance.

You may wish to consider the D5100 instead for slight $ more - much better than D3100 in specifications and also size quite the same as D3100 if that is your consideration

I did think of that but price is at least a few hundred dollars more. Besides, once when I start thinking of more advanced features, then it never ends and I start moving from one camera to another. Since I am really new at this, I figure I better start off with a more basic camera and I am also afraid the 5100 would be too much for me to handle.

By the way, for the 3100, is there an auto mode that I can leave on if I really cannot handle the manual adjustments? Also, what is the guide mode? Does it tell u what to set the camera to according to the situation or is this guide mode another term for some auto mode?

Also, is the 18-105 lens a good lens for landscape and general walkabout? I just want to focus on one lens for the moment when I travel.

Would appreciate some help here. Thks

I was in Orchard today and so decided to pop by a few shops. So far the lowest was $750 but with only the memory card and bag thrown in .

If you are reading the numbers, u might had guess the main difference of a 18-55 & 18-105 is the narrow end where one can zoom further than the other. There are other differences of cos but for a beginner, you can use this as a basic consideration.

Both kit lens are decent. I suggest u should just use either of them for your trip. If you think buying a better lens will deliver better results right off the bat, you will be really disappointed. These lenses have decent wide and narrow angle range.

u might negotiate for a kit lens exchange with top up from some shops. No harm trying. Good luck.

Hi, I just got my D3100 a few days ago. Its my first DSLR so I experimented with many things. Yesterday I accidently captured an interesting ghostly shot. I set the camera to shutter 30s and apperture 30. Set auto timer and suppose to click a landscape shot, but somebody stand in front of the camera and it turned out to be a ghostly figure. The lights became starry too. I wonder how did this 2 things happen. Can anyone explain the technicals?

I'm getting my d3100 in a few hours time. The person I'm buying from doesn't provide any memory card.

What types of memory card should I get for a new starter like me?

Long exposure caused the ghostly image

From what i've learnt, a aperture of f16 and higher would cause lights such as street lamps and even the sun to have that starry effect =) looks really cool!

Hi Guys, does anyone have problems getting tack sharp images even though you are shooting at f8-f11 for big group shots (ISO and shutterspeeds are not a problem because i took the shot at broad daylight)? My shots all seemed to be blurry.. and whenever i pump my ISO up to 800 or more, the noise levels are insanely high (at least for my liking).

anyone can recommend me a 18-200mm lens for D3100? Thinking of getting one.
