OFFICIAL: CANON EOS 650D User Thread

i using 650D with the Sigma 18-250mm as an all purpose lens. very good lens & good price. not very heavy too. comes with macro

Hi Wolvie, is this the lens you are referring to: sigmaphoto.com/product/18-250mm-f35-63-dc-os-macro-hsm. I apologise for my ignorance if posting links is not allowed.

Hi, new 650D user. Bought the Kit 1. First time DSLR user so there's many features I'm still learning. Recently, went to Tioman and managed to take some good pictures with Kit 1 lens though I can see that there are much more to lenses then there are to the body to improved pictures. Anyone know a good starter lens that can be used for multi-purposes such as Travel, Landscapes, Nature, Events?? I did some research and Sigma seems to be the brand mentioned the most and had a brief look at their lenses but I think user experience would be a better choice? Thank you in advanced.
Canon's 18-200 or the sigma counterpart.

yup. thats the one. theres a post on Pulau Ubin wildlife under wildlife section of photo gallery. took them with this lens.

thank you guys for your input. I will definitely check out the gallery. Is it better to get the 18-250mm instead if its just a difference of $50?

New user reporting. 650D with 18-135mm! Contemplating to get Sigma 30mm f1.4. Everything feels very foreign because I've been shooting in auto on digital cameras for the longest time ever. Just a question about the camera. I was just taking a few photos in my room in Av mode with evaluative metering, automatic AF point selection, and most photos are actually overexposed (half of my blinds were opened so the room was unevenly lit by the sunlight) I had to adjust exposure compensation to -2/3 stops before it was properly exposed. But when I shoot manual mode, the exposure compensation will be moving as I point the camera at different spots and manipulate the ISO, aperture and shutter speed so that I know how to get a proper exposure. Any way to make it such that I can get the same results with Av mode without messing with exposure compensation? I was using evaluative metering and automatic AF selection while in manual mode too.

All along, I thought the only two variables to play around with in Av mode are aperture and ISO. But if most of my photos are overexposed at 0 Ev, then is there something wrong with my camera? It wouldn't make sense if my photos are all exposed properly only at -1/3 Ev and below us it?

I apologize if this is too newbie of a question. Just trying to slowly learn from the community here :)

You might want to invest the lens hood for the 18-135mm lens as lens hoods limit the amount of light entering the lens.
When I own 650D with the same lens, I had the same problem as you but after attaching a lens hoods things have change.
However there still be times, certain scene will be overexposed so there's still need to do some adjustment.
For me, I would correct it using manual mode and adjust the shutter and aperture to get the right exposure.
Since you are still new to DSLR, learn the basic first as DSLR and Point and shoot are two different cameras.
Once you understand "Your camera and lens functions, limitations and how it works." than you can start exploring more
advanced controls such as the manual mode.

There are many people using 3rd party batteries without any issue but Canon recommends that you use original batteries and accessories. And welcome to the club. Anyway didn't Canon give you another battery? They gave me a extra battery when I purchased my DSLR last year.

Just go one of the shops and ask the uncle. I never had experiences with 3rd party batteries.

Hi guys. Am new 650D user. Currently interested in macro photography. Just wonder if anyone has same interest as me and hope to learn more from you guys. *Cheers!

No... lens hood don't limit the amount of lights entering the lens. ND filter, CPL, etc would limit the amount of lights entering the lens... but never a lens hood. A lens hood is use as a shade to prevent stray light from hitting the surface of the lens thus causing flare and glare.

I am using DSTE batteries for my OMD and now my 7D. So far, no problem. But I got those from ebay and waited close to 1 month for the batteries to be delivered.

Actually many lenses had this issues. My Siggy 17-70mm faces it too. Anyway, a rubber band solve my problem. Anyway, that problem is called lens creep.

wah i only bought less then 2 weeks from tkfoto .. cb they sell my lousy goods!

Not at all. Your lens is normal.

I had a Tamron 18-270 that had crazy lens creep. There was a lock on it that kept it at 18mm. When walking I got used to using the lock. Your Sigma may also have a locking mechanism.
